LCI headlight retrofit

Would the new LCI adaptive LED headlights be a plug and play mod (on a pre-LCI car) that would just require some coding, or is it more complicated than that?

The lights themselves are a straight bolt on swap.

HOWEVER, it is my understanding, that the new hex lights are only available on LCI cars optioned with adaptive headlights. So you would need a pre-lci optioned with adaptive headlights to make this even a starter.

I’m confident it can be codes but someone will need to buy a set to confirm the wiring.

All pre-lci M2's in the USA came standard with adaptive xenons so that's not an issue for us.

F&F Retrofittings in Germany has done LCI taillights on an M2 and the LCI guages on an M235 so i'm assuming a headlight retrofit is possible.

Just wondering if it's as simple as swapping the lights and coding out bulb errors or if more would have to be done.

It was that easy for the rear lights yes, I've done a few cars now. Only gotcha with the rears is the old lights use an 8 pin connector and the new lights use a 6 pin connector. You need to order the new plugs and re-pin them with the existing wires.

My concern, which is unfounded, is that the new front lights are similar. And at £2k for none refundable parts I've yet to find anyone in the UK willing to find out.

LCI gauges are simple. I have one guy 90% ready to buy the parts but as yet I've not done one yet. Anyone in the UK want to be the first?

Wish I lived in the UK I would definitely give you my car to try it out on. Hopefully you will get someone.

Are the clusters physically compatible? The LCI has the whole dash redesign, I thought maybe they wouldn't physically fit between the two holes.

Also, WTF is the blue FAKRA / coax connector for on the back of the cluster?? I see a multi-pin connector, and then a 2-position plug that I'm guessing is MOST / optical bus, but what does the cluster need an antenna connection for? Only thing I can guess is that it's connected to the keyless / convenience start, and that is all run through the cluster? (I know that stuff related to engine start & key security runs through the cluster on VW/Audi cars which is the only reason I'm thinking maybe BMW is similar...)

Blue connector looks to be optical, so more than likely flex-ray ( optical bus ) different from MOST, ( most is for multimedia and mostly deprecated )

I just purchased US LCI cluster and am curious is there any coding that need to be done?

Ordered brand new. Sorry but what's the difference between 6WA and 6WB I don't know what that means.

Guessing 6WA since it's still analog.

Then, with new unit, VO coding is only thing needed unless there is I-Step dependency difference requiring programming.

question is with many of the LCI cars having gauge cluster issues and needing a software update, will that affect those of us who retro fit them on our Pre Lci's

Just found the required part numbers for the LCI adaptive LEDs

LCI LED Adaptive Headlights (w / o Control Units)

63 11 7 469 783 LED AHL High - left

63 11 7 469 784 LED AHL High - right

Control units

63 11 7 457 875 Control unit front light electronics (x2)

63 11 7 494 851 LED daytime running light module - left

63 11 7 494 852 LED daytime running light module - right

63 11 7 955 318 fan (x2)

Price for everything not including install and coding is $5157.95

Looks like i'll be keeping my stock headlights, lol

Good news is the rest of the lci parts are more affordable. Tail lights are around 500 and the gauge cluster is around 1000.

I'm curious how many of the above parts are needed for a LCI car that did not come with the adaptive headlights. Would it be as simple as swapping out just the headlight assemblies?

Maybe cosmetically the assemblies would be plug and play, but If you actually want them 100% functional as adaptive lights and VLD etc. you'd need the control units changed as well.

I was very interessted in doing the lci headlight retrofit, so checked with my dealer and also a company, specialised in retrofits for BMWs.

Unfortunately, as others mentioned, it is not possible just to do a simple plug & play swap, even if you have the pre LCI adaptive headlights.
You need the new parts mentioned above, coding and so on....so the quote for doing the retrofit was around 7k :

A lot of money for just upgrading to LEDs, €but beside the part costs here, it seems BMW has no interesst, that people just easily can upgrade to the LCI options....at least it always makes that impression if you ask for something like this....surely not every dealer is like that, but I have the feeling it comes as a instruction from BMW to „scary off" people from doing such mods
