See here for some of my experiences with this device inside my former 1M: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1063158 ("BMW Head Up Screen retrofit (new accessory) (BMW part # 62 30 2 361 627)")

Below a video I found on the web:

Looks cheap as hell. I think I've seen that style display on toys.

You don't have to use the Navigational part of the HUS right?? You can just use it for the speed info and cruise control, etc?

Hudly seems like the best option. $250 with a $50 off discount.

https://gethudly.com/products/hudly-...nt=43520503686

If I didn't park where I thought people might want to steal it I would buy it and try it out. Doesn't show gear you're in though (DCT)

I am considering that since it would be transferrable to any car. But I'm mostly concerned about people seeing it and wanting to just jack it from my car. Where as the HUS it can fold into the mount and it's more discreet when folded in.

Correct. According to the marketing materials, you need a smart phone, Bluetooth and the Garmin app (iOS or Android) to use the navigation features.

The BMW solution looks slightly more appealing with the mount.

I’d still need to see it in person or in pictures/video from a real life user (with mount).

Any clue if the thing can be folded down? The mount looks like it has an area for that.

That would be an expensive piece to make, because it would require engineering a new mold - I'd guess too expensive for the company to consider because the likely number of people who are interested in buying the HUS and the dash cover is pretty small. Is the whole package really worth ±$1,300 to you, once you get it installed?

One of the downsides I experienced to be kept in mind (see here): the navigation function of the device uses WIFI/WLAN (not Bluetooth as some of you might think): as long as WIFI/WLAN is active on your smartphone and a connection established with the "Head-Up Screen" network, you'll have no longer access to Internet and won't receive incoming Internet messages (e-mails, Whatsapp, Facebook, etc.). You can still make phone calls, of course.

On long journeys I was required to (briefly) switch off WIFI/WLAN on my smartphone to allow messages to enter. No such thing if you don't use the navigation function (the car data displayed on the Head Up Screen doesn't need WIFI/WLAN - it sources the information directly through the ECU system).

I don't know whether this has changed in the meantime.

I figure you could just cut the plastic mold and bolt on a support for the HUD and work the leather/alcantara around it with proper stitching around the hole.

OEM BMW HUD mount looks 'okay' from the drivers seat and probably looks ugly from the front. So it's not it would be competing with something flawless

It seems there is a version that uses the integrated BMW nav:

I believe the iPhone changed the way how it connects to WIFI/WLAN networks if it doesn't have an actual data connection. On my Osmo camera, it uses a wifi to stream the live view to my iphone. But it'll still let you use your LTE/4G data connection since it reads that there's no actual internet data coming from the connection.

You're correct; integrated nav is available in some countries as an add-on product. The U.S. and Canada are not on that list, and the U.S. marketing materials say you need a separate app because the system will not work with the M2's nav.

So wait, is it able to be used with the M2's nav? I got confused by what you are saying lol

No, it will not work with the U.S.- or Canadian-spec M2's nav system. (I know there's a video that shows it working in Canada, but who knows how it was set up - or if that was just a demo?

From what I've been able to find out, the nav on the HUS will only work if you use a separate iOS or Android app on your phone that connects to the HUS via Bluetooth. I believe it's a Garmin app or a Garmin-compatible app, but I have been unable to find it.

So, what happens is the nav app on your phone sends some – but not all – of its data to the HUS via Bluetooth. For example, the HUS may show you arrows for directions, but not speed limits. (Just an example - I don't know for sure which data translates from the phone to the HUS.) I'm happy to have anyone else add more information or correct what I've said here, because the HUS seems to be an almost secret product. Caveat Emptor, YMMV and all that stuff.

This has been a lot of work trying to learn about this thing. Next time, ask something easy, like whether or not Adaptive LED Headlights are standard on LCI M2s that don't have the Executive Package.
