Dropped the car off this AM. The dealership just called and said i have the newest part # as shown in the work order by hjk BUT... there is another fix according to them. they will wield mesh over the vent openings to prevent stones from getting in. Will pick up the car tmrw or saturday depending on snow. They said this will retain cooling but prevent stones from getting in. No idea if this is standard bmw practice or not lol but they're ordering parts in order to do it so i assume it is. My dealership is Park Ave bmw in NJ
Given the two options, I'd pick the replacement part over having a dude weld something on my car. Seems like there's more room for error. Also, if BMW issued the replacement shield, I'd assume the cooling properties would be adequate. Maybe I'm being overly cautious?
Not sure if you mis read but I already had the replacement part. Im now adding the mesh to it.

Here's my work order. No mention of any mesh added. Just said they updated the part I supposedly already had. no grinding noises have been heard. i'll report back if they return.

The M2 and the 'soda can crunch noise' issue: compilation of some experiences

I took delivery of my M2 about 3 weeks ago. Immediately after I left the dealership, I heard strange noise from the left rear. To me it reminded me of the should we'd get when we lowered our cars and the tires would rub on the fender.

I still occasionally hear that noise, then yesterday I heard a new noise pulling into my driveway. It sounded like someone was knocking on metal. I thought it was coming from a neighbors hours, but it wasn't.

I've never heard noises from any other BMW's i've owned. My car is supposed to not have been included in the differential recall. The build date on my car is OCT 2016. I hope BMW identifies the cause and issues a recall.

It's embarrassing to have these noises coming from the car.

Just ask for the updated brake shields to be installed during your next service appointment. It's a non-issue.

It's EXTREMELY embarrassing. My M2 is an MY17, week 43 build, and it CONSTANTLY makes this noise. Most of the time it's continuous, until I hit a bump or pothole. It sounds like someone constantly scraping a pitchfork across a metal trash-can, and increases in pitch the faster I go. Worse than nails on a chalkboard...

I'm glad there seems to be a fix because I was starting to lose hope. It's been so bad, that it's nearly taken the fun out of driving the thing, which is why I bought the car in the first place. Big thanks (reps) to HJK for providing the part numbers etc. I just scheduled an appointment, so I'll be crossing my fingers.

Has anyone gotten the new shields and had the problem return? I haven't brought my car in for an update yet but the problem is intermittent so I'm wondering if this is really a 'fix' or if the replacement just removes existing lodged stones.

I have not had the problem return after I had the new shields installed.

Took it to West Coast, they were aware of the replacement shields and have fitted a few already.

FYI, I was informed when picking up my M2 on Friday that the new brake shields come with any car produced Feb 2017 and on (which mine was). In the bit of driving I've done so far, I've not noticed the noise, though have noticed that random rocks hitting the wheel wells are very audible. That's to be expected, though, I would think.

New 2017 M2

I just took delivery of my 2017 m2, DCT, 800 miles on the car first service scheduled for Thursday and I have definitely noticed some interesting noises from the rear of the car. The occasional thud and most recently when I was pulling into a parking lot at a very slow speed (entrance was at an incline and I didn't want to bottom out the front end) there was a screech from the rear of the car. Happen when I was about halfway in and came to a stop and pushed the gas pedal to get the rest of the way in. Pretty loud.

Is this normal?? I had a 2011 e92 m3 for 6 years and never heard anything like this.

Hah yea its bad/embarrassing. I keep putting off getting it fixed though because I found I can just hit the shields through my wheels with a big dowel I found in my garage and it knocks the rocks out. Obviously not a long term solution...

I've had my car about 3 weeks (arrived at dealer 3/16) ago and this noise appeared last Monday & then disappeared on Saturday when I had the dealership drive it. They had heard of the problem with pebbles getting caught up but didn't mention a recall/bulletin. I just emailed them with pics from this thread asking about getting the new shields installed.

Upgrade done today! New shields were installed at the dealer, now let's see what the outcome will be after a few days of driving.

I asked my dealership about replacing mine to get rid of the embarrassing noise and they told me there is no such part and basically to get used to it...

Some dealers don't deserve their BMW franchises. Tell them to check for SIB (Service Bulletin) 34-06-15 and replace the damn brake backing plates with the updated ones. Print out these forum postings and give them to the dealer.

I had a nightmare with my selling dealer trying to convince them there was something wrong and that other owners (many posting on this forum) were getting it dealt with successfully. I finally took my car to another dealer who knew immediately what was wrong, replaced the backing plates, and after 1000 miles driving with those updated rear backing plates I have not heard the soda crunch, not once.

Needless to say, after purchasing two new BMWs at the first dealer over the last four years, they will never see me again.
