Engine cutting out at 6k rpm after IC, charge pipe and stage 2 tune

Hello all, I just installed a CSF intercooler and FTP charge pipe today, along with an upgrade to Stage 2 Hex tune.

Everything seems fine just driving around town at lower rpm but when I go WOT, the engine violently cuts out at 6k RPM. I mean a really hard cut, it is extremely unpleasant.

No engine codes have been thrown yet and the car really does seem fine under normal driving conditions. My first thought is it must be a boost leak but I'm not sure.

I'm too exhausted to get under the car and check it out today but will tomorrow. Curious if anyone has any ideas on what's going on?

Either boost leak or since it's at high rpm maybe high pressure fuel pump? I would do a log and post

unfortunately he can't log since its hex tune.

OP, send an email out to VF tech support. Don't think anyone could help you here

Violent power cut off sounds like a HPFP issue. Do you run with ethanol and under low ambient temp?

Mine did the same thing with pretty much the same setup and bm3 e30 map.
Pretty much thought the engine totally took a crap the first time it happened. Mine got into limp mode as well. Was my hpfp crashing.
Changed the map to the 93 Ron and no problem.
Now going down the pi road to go for E85...

UPDATE

UPDATE: Verified all connections this morning and everything is very solid and how it should be. Switched back to my Hex Stage 1 and the issue went away! Very happy I don't need to spend another day busting my knuckles.

Been on the phone with VF already and they're looking into it. Will update thread again when this is resolved.

Random question ...

I see that you did the intercooler and charge pipes, but did
you also install downpipes?

And while we're asking, what fuel are you running? Have you
recently used any ethanol at all?

Hey there VF. I installed a fabspeed dp months ago, that's seen almost 2k miles with no issues. I run 93 octane only.

I checked all my work today and everything is solid, no issues with my IC or charge pipe install. I already put a ticket in with technical over the phone this morning. He suggested I switch back to stage 1 and see what happens, and all was well after that. I've since called and updated technical on that development.

I assume I won't hear back till sometime next week, as the holidays begin here shortly.

Mine did the same when I came home to cooler temps after doing a G-Power mod. I ended up changing the HPFP to XDI-35 and I now have zero issues and even took out more power.

After logging I saw the original HPFP started loosing pressure at around 5000rpm and at 6000 my car stuttered hard. Now with even more boost the HPFP keeps the pressure up to 7000rpm.

Resolution

VF got a revised tune over to me last week and I just had the chance to test it out tonight. Very happy to report all is well.

The tune feels great, lots of midrange grunt added and feels like its slightly stronger revving out to 7k over stage 1

VF was great with their customer service. Highly recommend!

Sounds like too much boost and too much fuel being called for which the HPFP can't keep up with and crashed?

No changes we're made to our standard Stage TWO calibration
strategy.

It was a file version issue based on incorrect data we had saved
in our database for this particular customer (as he was originally
flashed by one of our dealers on the East Coast approx. a year ago
).

The N55 based BMW ///M2 happens to be one of our most popular
F-series applications which has been thoroughly tested and validated
in-house on both our Mustang AWD and DynoJet 2WD dynos - and
with those capabilities and resources
- we have become well aware of
the limitations of the factory fuel system and do not push these motors
beyond those limits.

Those efforts allow us to to deliver optimal power gains and guarantee
long term reliability on traditional pump fuel (with not other required
changes to factory spec hardware, such as spark plugs/gap sizes/etc...
).

Could it be as simple as traction control cutting power due to wheel slip? Does it happen if you got DSC off or traction control off?

In the lower gears, and at low-to-midrange RPM, it could have absolutely
been related to traction control since an extra +80-90 ft lbs of torque
definitely has the ability to over power the tires!

In this particular instance, with the symptom described in more detail
by the OP
, we knew that wasn't the case as we have the knowledge of
how these cars are supposed to perform in nearly all conditions.

Not to hijack this thread, but I will be going with a VF Stage 2 tune, CSF IC and, and a VSRF charge pipe...all ordered today! I already have the Fabspeed sport DP and muffler bypass installed. I'm not planning on getting the car dynoed...so I was just wondering (ballpark estimate) what kind of HP and torque numbers I could reasonably expect from this setup?

Can't tell you number but I can tell you butt dyno feelers. I took a 200 mile trip up through the adirondacks today and lots of open highway proved this car is much much happier over 100 mph with this setup.

I still want more but I feel satisfied with what I paid and what I've received. Eventually I'll upgrade fuel and turbo and go for bm3 but until then, I'm very pleased with VF

You can "reasonably expect" a solid gain of +50-60 horsepower
and +80-90 torque, at the wheels.

The reason we focus on delta gains as opposed to peak numbers
is because every dyno will read slightly different, and even the
same dyno - with the same vehicle - will measure with some
degree of margin if run under different conditions.

The ballpark for peak numbers on a properly setup Stage TWO,
with optimal conditions and good fuel, can be anywhere from
375-400+ horsepower and 435-475 torque.

In our opinion that's just too great of a margin to advertise in
that manner ... especially since a lot of people set their own
personal benchmarks to be in the "400 Club" which isn't
always possible.

We prefer to under-promise and over-deliver.

I have yet to see a HEX Tuned (N55) M2 not meet our own
advertised gains (delta based) on either of our dynos, or
when tested independently!

Good to hear. Coming from no tune to stage two I think I will be happy.
