i had a awd Ford Edge for winter use not too long ago and the diff went on it and the smell it emitted was, I thought, similar to what I smelled coming from the M2. Mind you, my nose may be biased now with all the bad diff talk surrounding the M2 and my 'ford' experience so thats where my mind goes. The reason for the smell on the ford was the diff oil dripping onto the hot exhaust system-which was why I would never see any stains on the driveway.
I definitely don't have anything leaking from the diff, at least no puddle on the floor in my garage. Anyone else notice a smell too?

Ive had the same noise happen a few times within the first 5k miles. I do think its the same issue as the M4 with stones getting stuck in between the rotor and heat shield. Ive even had a rock get stuck for about a mile which made a constant rubbing noise. Just bend the heat shield back on both sides a tiny bit and you'll see some rocks fall out. Haven't heard the noise since!

I've had that soda can noise now nine times in 1000 miles. So I phoned the dealership to make an appointment for my 1200 mile inspection and told the service rep about the noise and suggested that it might have to do with stones getting into the brake dust shield. No, he says. It's definitely the differential, but when we change the differential fluid the noise will go away. (dealer has sold only two M2s, mine and one other, but based on that wealth of experience, and not actually hearing the noise my car is making, he's certain it's the diff). Duh!

I heard the soda can crunch today. From what I can tell it's coming from the drivers side rear. It doesn't sound like any of those videos and sounds more like a crunch than a screech.

Soda can crunch noise, exactly as captured in the video, has already happened to me on two occasions and my car has fewer than 75 miles on it. Week 34 build MY 2017 M2. Both occasions were low speed, coming out of a corner.

The first occasion it happened three times. Twice in rapid succession, and then a second later it happened a third time.

On the second occasion, I had just come out of a corner and was traveling straight at about 35 MPH, after shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear.

Exactly the same sound as captured in the video on Page 1.

Similar metallic sound after pulling a ticket from a parking lot and driving really slow trying to find a park. Thought my (eBay) diffuser had fallen off and was scraping on the ground! Disappeared after 10-15 seconds but had me worried.

BMW has issued a new recall for rear sub-frame bolts and notes in the letter to owners that you may hear a noise coming from the rear axle. They note if you hear the noise you should stop driving immediately and have the car towed to the dealer.

It's just rocks in the rear brake dust shield. The recall applies to those who have had the differential replaced and subframe bolts may have been reused. I have a MY17 and have noticed the noise when driving through areas with pebbles. I have not heard it since.

All this recall talk has me debating now.....I have a deposit down and am paying slightly over MSRP to avoid the year wait which was tough enough..now rear sub bolts and diff replacements? My vin thus far shows no recalls

As far as I know if you have a MY17 there's no cause for concern.

I don't have an M2 (yet) and have never heard the noise other than listening to the video, but this appears to be a plausible explanation. If a subframe bolt was loose and there is flexing it would cause the bolt threads to rub as it traveled up and down. That would explain the soda can crunch sound.

No, it's a very peculiar metallic crunching sound. Hard to describe. But once you'll hear it, you'll know straightaway. Pretty loud, especially if it occurs when your windows are rolled down.

This is a new recall. It is NOT related to the previous bolt issue with replaced diffs.

I have the crunching cans, grinding noises and my horn doesn't work!
It's a 2017. Build date was the last week in July.
No recalls yet😳
The car was fine until about 600 mi.

I haven't heard the rear diff can crunch sound since the dealer replaced the fluid at 1200 miles. However, I get lots of 'stones in the brake shield' sounds, which is different.

My township, in an effort to avoid the cost of repaves or sealing, has resorted to laying down a layer of fine gravel on many roads. I sound like I'm dragging a bunch of cans down the road. I should just some shoe polish and write "JUST MARRIED" on my rear window.

Yeah i heard something metallic when i went over some choppy pavement with 40 miles on the clock. Could have been the diff noise or just some very fine rocks on the under shield of the rear of the car. Nothing i ever heard in another car.

What is the intent of this thread? Are we saying that the diff recall fix might still be a problem, and we're all in line for another diff recall very soon?

This thread serves the purpose of informing each other about an unusual noise generated by the M2. Cause remains unknown. If you hear it (it's a particularly peculiar sound): don't worry, do know that you're by far not the only one.
