Carbon Front Lip
I love my CS, but I really don't understand the functional purpose of using carbon fibre for the front lip. Should have been the hard plastic version of the CS Racing.
Aftermath of a small metal plate kicked up by a car on the freeway... Price of a new lip - 4700 AUD. Hoping to keep this lip on for the inevitable bumps and scrapes, and store a new one away for future use. |

Sounds familiar. Cracked mine on a curb. Have a CS racing one coming on Friday. Will post pictures.

I have a few scrapes underneath mine already, but it's bound to happen. You literally have to get on the ground to see it.
To be honest, looks like you could maybe fill that and leave as is. Outside of a car show, how often are people going to get that close to the front splitter? I get wanting the car to be pristine, but these things happen. Still, sorry for your luck. Sounds like there was not much you could do to avoid it. |

I think a similar post could be made if they gave you a hard plastic lip...."how come I spent $100k and they couldn't even provide me a carbon lip?" Sucks, but it happens.

The carbon looks fantastic, but in such a high risk impact position, not the material I would choose to use. It is what it is, and is bound to happen again. Sure as hell not going to stop driving the thing! |

It is a beautiful lip though, this isn't the best picture but here is my CS next to two comps. The carbon hood and lip make such a difference.

Touch wood but it's pretty manageable. I lost my carbon lip once on the F80 and went to plastic after then (lost it twice again after then over 6 years). The 'mistake' I'd made was lowering the car with springs.
I've left the CS at stock height and it has plenty of clearance. Personally, I love the look and am willing to take extra care when driving near obstacles and parking. If you drive near a lot of potholes though it would be nerve wracking. |

I back into parking spaces to not risk ramming the concrete curbs. I also have passed up several parking lots because I didn’t like the incline coming from the road.
The lip makes me drive very cautiously but looks so damn good. Would never change it! |

I was caught off guard by a dip gutter running across an intersection with 6 lanes. When I turned right onto the street in the far right lane, the gutter was not deep and I didn't notice it. Leaving the same street making a left from the left turn lane I was at the top of the crown in the side road and the dip was pretty deep there, almost like a sidewalk ramp in its amount of angle. I was going maybe 10mph and didn't see it in time to slow down and take an angle. The front scraped very slightly. Fuck.
I haven't looked yet. I don't even want to know. I have PPF, but no Sliplo. One of these days I'll look. 👿

I have PPF and sliplo on mine. Still cracked it. It's my daily driver and have over 12,000 miles. It's just a splitter. I have a new OEM one with PPF and sliplo, but won't put it on. I like driving around not caring about scraping. I'll put the new one on when I find a new daily and stop driving this car as much, or when I sell it.

I agree and also possibly saved the rad tucked in there…
But more generally, I took the view that it was a forgone conclusion that I would scrape the lip…. Which was a useful approach to have taken, when I sandpapered the bottom of it on my own driveway literally driving home from the dealer… |

What actually happens when it's removed? It's easy to do.

If you aren't doing high speed track stuff it wouldn't matter. BMW claims you need it for balance on downforce (I'd have to dig to find their reference on that). I haven't seen actual data that says how much front lift or airflow it changes.

I am also tired of caring for this carbon fiber piece, which should have been made of plastic like they use on Porsche GT cars. |

Mate, I'm sorry to see this happen to you. I think you've got the right idea about keeping the new one on the shelf until the last moment.
Stay safe
