I would say the og m2 with the n55 is slightly more reliable compared to the m2c but in general both are pretty reliable. The F series is probably BMWs most reliable generation. Not enough data on the G series yet.

Mine is 4 years old, pretty reliable so far, but there are some small hiccups.
1) Key is not working properly and is undiagnosable so far. It just occurred last year after I had a bunch of equipment installed in my car. So I am going to assume all of the new electronics and their wireless signals (bluetooth, wifi etc) is causing interference with the key. 2) Valvetronic ticking, it occured the day I brought my m2 home and happened very very rarely. It has since stopped for over a year now with no sign of returning. 3) A resistance in shifting from 1st to 2nd, but no gear grinding or any real issues. It has occurred since day 1 as well. Overall just a few minor gripes, but zero reliability issues.

I'd say M2 is one of the more reliable BMWs in recent years. My '17 has been solid and I've put it through multiple track days and daily triple digit exposure on the Autobahn.

See for example here: https://garagestpicks.com/does-windo...keyless-entry/ Also, try opening/locking the car with the remote against your chin, using yourself as some 'antenna'.

Yeah this issue frightens me, however the issue has completely disappeared, so I'm not going to worry about it too much. Plus I don't trust my dealership to work on the car, especially since they couldn't even put on a bumper properly.... Or do a brake fluid flush without it leaking on the calipers and eating the paint.

My 2018 M2 is a rental car on Turo and has 33k miles, much of those miles in the canyon roads around LA (I track it via GPS).
So far other than the taillight's being replaced under the TSB it is solid. My M2C only has 6k miles so all is well still, no surprise.

For the fob problem, aside from the electronics interfering with the signal (very likely, happened to me with a fried dashcam that annoyed the TPMS) have you put in a new fob battery? That should be first.
As for reliability, my car (18 months) has been good, with just a iDrive replacement and a steering rack replacement to rectify a notchy feel that no one noticed but me. And 5 additional service visits to fix things that they left unplugged during the other visits.

I don't think you'll find reliability issues with the M2. But what you'll probably find is high maintenance costs as the miles rise. I haven't looked at the schedule since my car has only 12K on the clock, but I'm sure a clutch isn't cheap, and standard things like brake rotors tend to be a LOT more expensive than those of other brands (BMW tax).
So, if you plan to have it 4 to 5 years with average or low miles, no worries, but if you plan to keep it for the long haul then it's undoubtedly going to cost you some coin. |

But you have a point, if someone brings it to a shop it's probably going to be in the $1k range.

Speaking of high service costs, I got the oil and filter changed on my '17 M2 here in Germany at the nearest BMW dealer. Full service history is very important here for resale. I plan to sell the car when my assignment here is over in the fall of next year. Just the Oil and Filter plus 2 "free" espresso's cost me nearly 700 Euro.
I did the oil changes on all our cars back home, and there is no reason it should cost more than $40 in parts. I was stunned. What a ripoff. Just so I can view the service on the iDrive.

It's ~1K just for the flywheel - already checked. At 55K miles, my SA said that if you replace the clutch, you should also replace the flywheel at that mileage.

Interesting that it's needed at 55K miles, I mean, that's terrible by any standard other than Lamborghini. And it's not resurfaceable? Weird.
