URGENT - Stone Damage to wheels
Folks,
Has anyone experienced issues with stones getting stuck between the brake calliper and the inside wheel rim, causing scratches to the inside of the wheel rim? I have had 2x M2Cs now:- the first car had this happen on both front wheels within 1750 miles. the second car has ALREADY had this happen on the left hand front wheel before the car had completed 150 miles. I don't drive anywhere unusual, or particularly gravelly. I don't have a gravel drive. This never happened on my Porsche - being driven in exactly the same places as my M2C is, and I believe this is an issue with the M2C with the big brake kit. Any reports will help me build a case with BMW UK, which could benefit us all. Thanks, Ben |

It's common, I looked into it when specing mine, and went with blue calipers as a result. Really not much gap between the 2NH caliper and the wheel barrel. Big issue for M3/M4 with CCB (same caliper) on 19s as well.

This is not fit for purpose, and I'm not going to just accept my £60k car being damaged by bad design in the first 150 miles. BMW UK need to sort this, and I need evidence that it's wide spread. Ben |

If you google "m4 ccb wheel damage" your should find a couple of extensive posts on the topic...strugglng to copy the links from my phone.
Only way to sort it is run smaller brakes or 20 inch wheels I'm afraid. |

Yep. I'm convinced mine was damaged before I bought the car but I didn't notice til switching to winter tires at 300 km. The dealership replaced my rim and caliper at no charge because of my brand loyalty (and after quite a bit of arguing on the phone). Not sure if it's important to know that my car came with 437Ms.

Both wheels for me, but comes with the territory I guess. The solution is smaller brakes which I don't want, or bigger wheels which I also don't want. Plan is to simply use a paint pen, paint the groove black and move on.

I'm UK. Happened to one of my 763m Fronts, a nice silver score mark all the way around.
I have factory BBK kit. I think the only way is to have a great relationship with a dealer/local parts and service guy and try and leverage that. It's worked for me in the past with a couple of OCD warranty issues. Like others have said, it'll only happen again even if you get a new wheel so I've just learned to live with it and have forgotten it's there now. Clean the car, sparkling rims, 10mins hard driving, 48 tonnes of brake dust instantly covers up the silver score mark. |

I’m at 400 miles and just noticed yesterday while washing my wheels that the passenger front wheel has a small groove from a rock. Never noticed any noise during my drives. I figure there will be plenty more grooving to come. Poor design.

And here I was thinking I was nuts and too OCD...
You guys bought a high performance car with massive high performance brakes. What the heck do you expect BMW to do for you? How is this in any way a design flaw? It seems to me you have 3 options: 1. Swap for smaller brakes that won't stop the car as abruptly and won't look as "race car." 2. Keep the awesome brakes and quit bitching, because guess what? It's going to happen eventually no matter what brakes are on your car. 3. Invent a high-suction vacuum system that will suck loose rocks from your wheel barrels before they can make contact with your rims, thereby making the world a better place.

BMW has had a thing with brakes and stones recently...for the F80/2/3, it was stones getting stock between the heat shield and the disc. What a horrendous noice that creates! Fortunately it hasn't happened to me in over a year. Thanks for the head's up on this issue, although as noted it seems to be "pay to play" situation.

Has anyone tried putting protection tape/film along the inside of the wheel? Similar stuff to what they use for bumpers but comes as tape? The "self healing" kind?
It might prevent the rocks from scratching, but the wheel still may have an indentation. |

I'm glad they replaced it but I wouldn't go after BMW on this. That's a bit of a lame move in my opinion. I'm willing to live with the risk of it happening again if it means having some wicked brakes on a kickass car. |

I had my snows on my M2 and then my M3 and noticed the fronts have a line carved in them (around the inside is the wheel). Is this what we are talking about?
