That would be really nice. Unfortunately, I don't think it will ever happen. At least not until you can run two apps on an iPhone AND they bring that to CarPlay. Also, most car displays don't have the wide proportions of the BMW screen to support displaying two apps simultaneously. So Apple would be doing all this only for BMW.

For a while there has been a little add-on called NGXPlay which you can install if you Jailbreak your iPhone. NGXplay allows any app to run on CarPlay.

I tried it out using an older iPhone 5 on 10.13.3 and it worked fine. The apps ideally need a bit of UI optimization though to work well on Carplay especially if you don't have touchscreen i-Drive.

Yes, in theory it actually would be a better solution. But I need an excuse for those joiks to update my ISTEP anyway and they keep refusing me.

My car was ordered with the $750 Smartphone Connectivity package that is supposed to come with WiFi hotspot and Apple CarPlay. On delivery when the salesman was doing the walkover with me showing me how to connect my iPhone I asked where's the option for CarPlay and he noticed it wasn't on the menu nor was WiFi and said that the car didn't have the Smartphone Connectivity Package but when he opened the armrest it has the wireless charger hardware and it shows up on the equipment list. The dealer had never seen that before where BMW didn't install the correct software to go with the hardware so now I'm going to wait to get that done when I go in for the 1200 mile service.

Really helpful guy. I messaged him yesterday and got an answer within the hour. Discussed the process over WhatsApp and decided to proceed. He sent me the file within minutes after I paid. Followed the simple installation process which took about 10-15 minutes and now it's all up and running.

Incidentally, I don't have 'Enhanced Bluetooth' or 'Wireless Charging' either and it works perfectly.

Similar issue here. What exactly does the fix do?

I used these guys and it all worked exactly as promised. That was in April and no issues since the install. Speak with Thomas. Really helpful and sent me the files by email within 10 mins of paying him by PayPal. Also helped when I had questions after installing the files he sent. Top guy.

You do the initial pairing using Bluetooth and from then on the phone communicates to the CarPlay using WiFi. It’s much better than any system I have used in other cars and several people who ride with me mention how they wish their cars had it.

I use my CarPlay with the phone in the wireless charger with no issues. If you also have Apple Music it works flawlessly and is all controlled using the touch screen or the idrive wheel with no need to interact with your phone.

It handles calls, text messages and all that really well. Once it’s paired you basically just forget about it and it just works. Many people on here complain that theirs doesn’t work but mine has been great.

My M2 doesn’t have Apple CarPlay, when syncing via Bluetooth I only get the option of mobile or App. I looked online and found out you can install it later at your dealer for a fee. Talked to my dealer in Kuwait and I was told they don’t do it. I emailed BMW HQ, whom forwarded me to BMW Middle East, who forwarded me to BMW Kuwait. There reply was since Apple CarPlay doesn’t work in the Middle East, they don’t install it. The thing is, it actually does, I have it on my Focus RS and I love it. Apple Maps doesn’t work in Kuwait but I am fine with that and willing to pay the fees.

Long story short, is there anyway to do it myself or buy the software online and have it installed by a decent garage/technician?

My dealer insisted that it was a factory installed option only, couldn't be swapped/enabled once the car was built. Thankfully he was unbelievably wrong. I bought through the connected services option a few weeks after the car was delivered.

Only bummer is I can't seem to program a button to turn CarPlay on and off, and I prefer some of the iDrive functionality depending on what I'm doing. When you enable CarPlay a lot of the duplicate features are disabled in iDrive and default to CarPlay.

I assume as the last resort, you can turn of your Bluetooth and that should disable apple carplay?

Problem with that is then you lose all
Phone connectivity, including the ability to make or receive calls or texts.
