Was at Road Atlanta yesterday and brakes are toast. Previously ran the pads at Roebling Road with stock tires, but that track is pretty easy on pads and they felt great.

First three sessions weren’t too bad, but it was split between my wife and I and we were learning the track.

4th session I decided to push it. Car is running RE-71RS 275/35-18 & 295/35-18 on stock suspension.

3rd lap pads finally said I surrender in 10a.

So what to do. We have AMP on Sunday.

Well Dscovery Parts at AMP had a set of Ferodo 3.12 in stock. Swapped pads and bled lines in the hotel parking garage today. Worried that they would be horrible to drive on. However they seem to bite as good as stock when cold. I’ll provide my impression after a day at the track.

Pad Swap

The 3.12 is a much better option. As you’ve found, the DS2500 isn’t up for the job. Enjoy AMP.

The DS2500 has limited capability on a car as powerful and heavy as an M2. That is particularly true if you're running the OEM brake calipers and discs, because the stock brakes run really hot. If you had our complete brake kit installed, you'd likely have a better chance to pull off the DS2500s. The DS3.12 and DS1.11 are much better suited for the M2 for track duty...particularly on a heavy braking track. On Roebling Road, you can probably get away with DS2500 on a regular basis. Ironically, I always use that track as an example of an easy braking track. It is full of sweepers without many long straights and heavy brake zones...Road Atlanta, not so much! Road Atlanta is much, much harder on brakes due to its layout, and I would never suggest DS2500 on an M2 on that track. Probably not even a good idea in our complete AP Racing by Essex Brake Kit, which runs much cooler than a stock caliper and disc combo.

I'm glad you were able to safely bring the car home without any incident, and glad that Ron and company at Discovery were able to help you out...great peeps!

They DS3.12 has fairly good street manners. They are quieter than just about every other legit racing pad I've ever seen. If you run them cold a lot they will eat your discs, but that's true of any race compound run cold. Please check out our Ferodo Pad Guide...we discuss each Ferodo compound in detail:

Good info thanks. Brake kit is on the road map.

Most of the track days the rest of the year will be at RRR at least.

The DS3.12 were rock solid at AMP. Not as hard on the brakes as Road Atlanta IMO but still a good test.

From cold to hot pedal feel pretty consistent. They do bite harder when they heat up. I would say that the range to modulate may largely depend on tires and suspension. It isn’t hard to trigger ABS but I got used to them fairly quick and found the threshold. I would not use these on a stock tire since that would probably make it more sensitive to triggering ABS.

Even when I ran a bit too deep into 1 the brakes came through.

Noise is pretty minimal.

Drove home with them and never felt like they were an issue. Even cold they are far superior to the stock pads. They do make noise when stopping.

Since this car is being driven to the track will likely swap tires and pads in the garage at the same time and run DS2500 on the street.

Finally my wife was doing her 3rd track day and had a coach. She was very happy with the brakes. She didn’t expect the noise when they heated up but she said she never felt like they were hard to use and felt confident using them.

Check into the brake coding that’s available for these cars that mitigates the inconsistent brake pedal pressure and instability under threshold braking they sometimes display.

Fresh RE71RS probably mask it, as available grip is a factor in my experience. As your RE71RS lose grip over their life you may see it exacerbated.

Daap is the guys username I believe.

I've been testing lots of pads in the BMWs we rent out @ trackcar.rent over the last 2 years.

I run the hawk ER-1 in the M2's and they work well. Where that doesn't work I run the hawk DTC70.

Ferodo is too expensive IMO.

Thanks. I’ve heard mixed opinions on Hawk. Many years ago it was either Hawk or PFC for the domestics I built. I guess the only way to truly know is to try them.

I’ve actually moved on from DS3.12. My last two sets burned up much quicker than before for some reason. Same thing for some guys I know on other platforms.

Going back to my previous fav, PFC. Trying the 39 compound soon (have done 08, 01, and 11 previously).

Also moved on from the DS2500 on the street. Too noisy in the winter. Running Porterfield R4-S for street, dead quiet with good feel and fade resistance.
