No but once you turn it off you'll be surprised that that sound you think is the engine is actually the stereo.

ASD disabled and aftermarket exhaust, super happy now. Even without the new exhaust I would just disable it. I hate when the sound from systems like ASD are ever so slightly off from the user inputs.

I am curious if there is a correlation between those who don't mind ASD and those who have DCT. In a previous dual clutch car I didn't mind the active sound system. In cars with manual transmissions I absolutely hate active sound systems.

If I'm trying to listen to music on the freeway the ASD is a bit much. I have MPE and usually only drive in sports+. The 6MT needs a 7th gear, it seems to be at a somewhat high level of RPMs (and noise) for only doing 75mph.

Is it better to code it out or go with the TechnicPNP harness?

You'd probably notice it if you turned it off and had something to compare it to. Much quieter and more natural sounding imho.

I turned it off about a week ago, the cabin is much quieter and the sound system is more enjoyable.

I love everything about this car including and especially it's sound. I would not presume to know better than German engineers or mess with their work of art.

Two problems with that:

1 - You think German engineers never mistakes? Google "BMW Nikasil recall" or "s54 bearing failure" sometime. And the M2 is not perfect. It's difficult to position the steering wheel to see the entire gauge cluster, and the gauge lighting is poor. The gas tank should be bigger. The electric steering is kind of numb. I'd include mandatory ASD as something else on the list of faults.

2 - Just because engineering implemented it, doesn't necessarily mean they agree with it. ASD is there because marketing thinks people want it.

To me, ASD is a gimmick, and I'm thankful for the existence of the PnP harness.

ASD has nothing to do with true automotive "engineering," and everything to do with marketing. The marketing department thinks ASD makes the car more desirable.

I have no qualms asserting I know better than German marketers

I respect the analysis but can't help thinking it's too damn much analysis. This forum is chock full of nit picking which is ok that's what this forum is about discerning end users sharing thoughts. Of course German engineers aren't "perfect" no humans are. They are however the best in the world in my opinion. As far as marketing vs engineering this is pure speculation on your part with zero evidence. To me the end product is what matters and again in my opinion BMW makes among the most fantastic products in the world consistently. I know I own four. All the nit picking about sound, sun visors and other nonsense won't change that.

The ASD is very similar to the MPE in that respect, no?

I must admit though I'm torn... I don't like the drone on any good cruising speeds, but I love the throaty sounds at low speeds and the beautiful sounds that occur during a downshift.

Most likely will drive for a few more months and then decide.

But I do not forget some sounds are fake... they just sound so nice, once I start to notice ASS does not sync with my left foot I may begin to question the reasoning!

I turned ASD off and while I'm just in comfort mode and blasting my music, I missed the fake rumble. or is it really fake? The source of the sound is still coming from the exhaust and engine and rerouted to the speakers right? It's meant for us to enjoy the car more by hearing how the car sounds as if you are outside the car. I'm keeping it! Thanks to Bimmelink for instant on/off switch!

I recently installed an MPE and just today coded off the ASD using BimmerCode. It's perfect now.

I honestly can't believe how much that fake engine noise was detracting from my experience. It's really hard to describe. Just good, old fashioned mechanical noises now and it's absolutely perfect.

What exhaust did you go with?

I disabled ASD and love it. I do a lot of highway driving and the extra drone was annoying. Also I think I need to relearn driving a manual but sometimes when I was shifting with ASD I would hit the gas a little too much and the ASD would add to the sound. With ASD off I barely hear this now.

It's really fake, you can get m5 sound by coding if you want.
