M2 CS above MSRP: about folks flipping cars

Thought it might be useful to have a thread of people trying to flip M2 CS' for profit right now. (not including the dealers asking ADM)

These are the 3 I I've seen. The second one was posted earlier by a member (when it was listed for 115k) but I cannot find that thread.

Artemis please merge with that thread or feel free to delete if counter-productive.

So, could someone educate me on why they listed the car as used and not marked it up while new, with 16 miles.
Is that to get around some BMW NA regulations?

I removed the sellers details from the pictures and comments. They don't deserve publicity.

What is your take on these sales? I see two sides to this coin. If I was in the market or an enthusiast late to the party I'd be frustrated at the inflation of the prices, but there are currently new cars still available at msrp. On the other side, the prices pushing up is good for those that own them already and doesn't cause any direct market harm.

It seems the consensus leans toward negative on the practice, but with cars still available I'm not quite sure why. The availability being key here because it annoys the crap out of me with bourbon and other stuff when it is getting flipped by people who have no interest in the product and just make it more expensive for those that actually do.

My intent in posting these today was not to bring any negative publicity to the people selling these, just to have a thread where we could add similar cars. And I get the argument that there is a market for people willing to pay over ask when new cars are available yada yada, so these dealers and individuals sell (or try) to sell them at these prices. (Looking at what's been happening with Xbox's/PS5's/and graphic cards for the last 6 months is a great example, albeit at a different price point.)

That being said, the practice in general annoys the hell out of me. As you said, if you're an enthusiast late to the party or someone who's genuinely going to enjoy this car, maybe in 2-3 months from now when the new inventory is gone, it prices the car out for many who would have bought it at the 85-95 sticker.

I know the pain very well, I've been trying to get my hands on a bottle of Pappy for over half a decade now and refuse to pay the $2-3k markup!!

Possibilities:
  1. the seller cannot get over the absence of an armrest and also gets tired of his partner regularly yanking the 'no comfort access' door handles;
  2. one tiny 'raclette' pattern on the M2 CS CFRP roof inevitably triggers the seller's obsessive-compulsive disorder, seriously compromising his 'Freude am Fahren': no-one notices it, but he knows it's there and the very thought of it is haunting him time and time again;
  3. the seller fails to fathom why BMW made the gaffe of installing three pedals despite drivers only having two feet;
  4. the seller hyperventilated lately after having read obscure comments on the interwebs in a thread entitled "Crank hub failure: does it mess with your wallet or with your broad imagination ?";
  5. the seller is a coin-flipper shark with zero respect for the M2 €$ and heading for a reality-check as time moves on.
I put my bets on #5 (possibly in combination with #3).

My guess is they may have paid over markup? But who knows... with taxes etc the prices aren't marked up that much in all honesty.

Also, in California the dealers here aren't budging at all. I have yet to find one for below MSRP with most asking 5k over msrp and at most 40k over msrp

The market will decide on these cars

My gut says they will never see over list for private transactions

Piece of advice by John Goodman in "The Gambler" (featuring Mark Wahlberg driving a Valencia Orange 1M) about the goal of financial independence: "Own your own house, have a couple bucks in the bank, don't drink."

Is that to get around some BMW NA regulations?

I don't know about US regulations, but in Australia, you can list a car as "new" if and only if you are a licenced OEM dealer.

In that vein, even if you are a motor trader, say with licence from Mazda you couldn't list a new car from say BMW.

As a private seller (non-trader), you can only list a car as used even if new.

The seller may also claim that he's a genuine petrolhead and no coin flipper. But...
