M2 CS Exhaust Note

Took delivery two days ago and one of the things that immediately struck me about this car was the sound. I was expecting it to sound like the S55 in my M4 but instead what I found was a much deeper, smoother note, which almost reminds me of my N54 135i.

Absolutely blown away by the way it revs out under load - I'll try to get a recording of that in the next week but in the meantime here's a quick startup and some revs.

I don't hear anything to get excited about .......
I opted for a much more melodious Akrapovic exhaust but the main thing is that you are happy 😊

I suppose it's more of an expectation vs. reality thing. I expected to get the same sort of tone as my M4 but instead got something which I like much, much more and wanted to share in case anyone else was expecting the same.

Thanks for this. I'm going to wait for delivery to form a judgement. I had the original S55 noncomp F80 and didn't like the exhaust so got the titanium MPE and was much happier. We have a B58 on a X4 M40i and it sounds great. Will wait and see what the S55 sounds like on the CS and make a call on exhausts once I've heard it in person. There is a chance I'll stick with it as the YouTube's I saw on the Akra didn't strike me as significantly better to warrant the cost. Not sure if that was an OPF issue for slip ons? In Aust there is no OPF so fingers crossed...

Part of the difference in opinions is almost certainly no-OPF (U.S.) vs. OPF (Euro)

OPF or no OPF, I still think the S55 sounds bad in M2 CS. Needs an Akrapovic, and I'm putting one on mind after break-in.

The sound in this video sounds awful in my opinion.

If you code the car to turn the exhaust valves always "full open" in Sport/Sport+ it makes a big difference in exhaust note. Also believe it or not I think the cans get louder with mileage.

You don't even need to code the car to do this. You can buy an exhaust valve controller than you can install yourself in about 20 minutes to run multiple exhaust valve profiles: OEM, always open, or always close. My Macht Schnell unit is controlled by the BC button on the stalk and will not cause any warranty issues. It is not as controllable as a full tuning solution, but on pricey cars like the CS I imagine most owners will want to keep their warranty intact for at least a while.

I have the BMS CAN flap module as well, great cheap way to manually control the valves and get more noise out of the stock exhaust when you want it (and close them if you don’t... like cold start in neighborhood

The only thing that has me hesistant to switch out the exhaust to an Akrapovic, is that there were some publications saying that the new exhaust is responsible for the HP gains off the Competition car (Chris Harris said this in his top gear review).

This seems completely unplausible though.

My car has 3000 kilometers (1860 miles ) and the exhaust become a bit louder. The sound is different than my previous 2018 M3 Comp. It is less loud (OPF) but more melodious and more like a « traditional » inline 6. It has zero pop and bang. Since the exhaust is quieter I can hear the turbo when window is open. I think it will become a bit louder when i will be able to reach the redline (I am still breaking in the car and I didn't pass 6000rpm under full load for now).

Did you install the Akrapovic already? If so, would be great to get a thread on that, if you did the Link pipe or not, etc. I'm really curious to learn more before i pull the trigger. In the US, i guess more hesistancy cause we don't have OPF.

I'm keen to keep the car as original as possible. Hoping the exhaust sound will 'cure' over time. A lot of the reviews on press cars that have some miles on them comment on the good or great sound of the car (including the EVO COTY edition I had delivered today).

I also do not like the way the exhaust hangs down on the CS or the Comp cars. Looks hideously ugly, like something you'd see on a tuned Honda Civic. So i'm keen to move to something that deletes that look also.

I know what you're saying though it grew on me with my F80 after I parted out the MPE exhaust.

That all said, the quirkiness of the original F87C/CS exhaust look will no doubt become one of the talking points of these cars as they evolve into the classics they will inevitably become.

Love how it looks on the C. Will love how it looks on the CS. People fixate on the strangest things.

I have a question, does the valve stay closed even in Sport and Sport +? I just picked up my M2CS and don't hear the valve open and close like I used to do with my M3 at a standstill when I change from comfort to sport.

The valve has no correlation to the drive modes. It's based on detected gear, throttle position, and if the cats are heated up enough yet or not. The valve is mostly an emissions thing to get the exhaust/cats up to temp faster on initial startup.

The state of the valves has everything do with driver mode and nothing to do with emissions. The initial RPM and coolant loops are for emissions and to get the cats up to temp as fast as possible. You're right though that the valves will open at WOT regardless of driver mode.

I know that the valves won't open until the car warms up, but once this happens I'm used to hearing a click that indicates the valve opened. If I switch the car back to comfort, I'm used to hearing another click that it's closed. On the M2 CS I don't hear anything when I do that.

They should be open on startup if in sport+. Can you not hear a tone and volume difference between the modes on startup?

I hear a tone difference in sport + when I apply the throttle. When the car is idling there is no difference between comfort and sport +.
