How to hook up a battery tender?

Quick question--

On an M2C, what's the easiest way to use a CTEK battery tender for long-term storage?

Use alligator clips to clip to the (extended) battery terminals under the hood?

Or, install a pigtail directly to the battery in the trunk?

Looking for what works and won't damage the electrical system.

TIA--

R.

The M2 manual says to connect to terminals under the hood.

I do this and route it out to the opening near the windshield. If you're more patient you can route them through the opening in the grille instead.

Under the hood is the best. If you hook up directly to the battery you are essentially bypassing some of the safety/controls that BMW has in place to protect the battery. If hook up to the battery you may throw off the battery sensors the car has in place.

Thanks guys-- I'm about half a country away at the moment, but I'll move towards a hood mount when I get back.

I'd like to mount something permanently, so I'll have to take a look at the connections.

What if you need the tender connection to come from the trunk? I already have the under hood connection but would like to add one in the rear for when the car is backed in or cover on. What's the best place to connect in the trunk to keep the monitoring system in place?

There is a long thread that discusses all the ways to hook up a trickle, I went the trunk route and have been very happy with it:
