9 months sounds doable. I was hearing people say 18 months +. In fact my dealer told me 1 year.

I'll probably get on a list, and see how things go. If the wait becomes unbearable or I decide I want another car (probably an M240 xDrive), I'll just do that.
If the dealer said a year, it won't be sooner than that... I'd suggest you consider 12 months to 16 months as the window.

Not "louder" necessarily. I actually found the M4 to be louder on startup in an annoying way.

The M2 isn't much louder overall but it has a better sound quality all of the time. If it's louder than it is only marginally louder (sport+ vs. sport+, etc). Having said that, if you need a quiet car, an M2 won't fit the bill.

Dealers do get their own allocations that don't go through the waiting list. You may have to buy some extra options or something but you can get one. That's how I went from asking my dealer about a M2 to having a production number in three weeks even though there were 18 people on the wait list. But I had to get the MPE and CF tips which I really didn't want (like you, I'm not one of those who want the car to be ridiculously loud). But, oh well, I'm getting a M2.

I figured I'll wait 6 months or more from when I placed my deposit down to recieving an allocation.

Very hard to answer that question straight up. You gotta know:
1. Your dealers M Volume
2. Allocations for the 16, 17 year
3. # on the wait list

I think the best thing to do is just to wait until your in the allocation list somewhere and hope people cancel above you. Your real timeline is when your car goes into production.

And ask around..

Myself..I signed up last week of march (or 1st week of april) I was number 7, dealer told me they had 7 allocations until Dec 2015. A couple people canceled, I got to number 4, and my car is on the ship heading over after completion of production Aug 1st.

Waiting game sucks.

I don't want a "quiet" car and I enjoy the exhaust sound of the M235i and M235i + MPE. I just thought the M4's exhaust was really loud. Granted, they did start it INSIDE the dealership to drive it outside.

I am honestly just kind of waiting until January or whenever the first 2017 allocations go out. I am number 8 on their list, but they are a higher volume M dealer and say they are getting 1, 2 or 3 allocations per quarter, and first quarter 2015 they got 4. So if 1 or 2 people cancel, I'm #6 or #7... at 2 allocations per quarter that's still about a year, but if they get 4-5 per quarter with possible ramped up production in 2017, that's 6 months.

If 2017 rolls around and things aren't moving any faster I'll probably just get frustrated and say fuck it. I'll get an M240i and load it up.

You don't care about 1 if you know 2.

I would say it depends completely on the dealer. I put a deposit down in 2 places and was number 15 in one place number 3 in another.

If you live in Europe I would assume it would be quicker as you don't have to wait for a boat to ship it to NA.
