In fact I believe this is what Randy Pobst said about the 1M:
“The 1M is an improvement on the 135, which I’ve spent some time in, but NOT my favorite car. In fact, I hate this car. It won’t turn. The thing I didn’t like about the 135 was its mid-corner understeer, its reluctance to turn once it was in the corner, and the 1M still does that. And it’s the primary thing I remember after driving the car. That it is very lazy on turn-in.”
The M235i fixed this understeer from the 1 series so the M2 should have much better turn-in than the 1M.
I'm not saying it's a bad car - it's very good - but let's be real. The 1M is in fact very much like the Z4M, an M car that was very raw and fun, produced in low quantities, but not with the most balanced handling characteristics.

Aha, so that controversial Randy Pobst 1M soup got reheated.

Even if Randy is wrong, the rest still stands. Again, not saying it's a bad car at all but my bar for "special" is higher.

I think that's a stupid response. Implying people are getting a m2 because they can't afford the m3/4. That's the furthest from the truth. I can get an m3 but I prefer the m2 size. I promise you that I'm not the only one.
+1. I have a M3 now and will be getting an M2.

Someone is a little butt hurt. Get over it. I didn't imply anything. I just think it's not anywhere close to an M3. :

I mean, it's got so many components directly from the M3, it is at least pretty darn close.

Agreed... the M3/4 will be better but the gap won't be huge IMO. I bet the car will do very well from a pure performance perspective relative to its big brother.

The funny thing is with the way discounting, finance deals, BMW support on certain models works here in the uk I can get an M4/M3 for near enough the same price as an M2. And in some cases if it's pre reg by the dealer the M4 will probably work out cheaper. Makes the decision even harder.

Saying that I still want the M2. I like the smaller body, prefer the looks to the M4 (although I admit I was tempted by an M3) and with the smaller production numbers it should be a cheap car to own depreciation wise.

There is a reason why M4s are so cheap... They hardly sell them.
