Radar Detectors
Hi All New guy here about to take delivery of a 2021 M2 Comp. Forgive me if this question has been asked and answered before I didn't find the answers through search. I think the first thing I will need is a radar detector as I plan to drive the hell out of her but would like to know what you guys and girls are using? I have heard good things about the Uniden R7. Cheers

They have been illegal here in Australia for several years now, with massive fines & severe penalties.
It seems our revenue hungry government have become addicted to this income & are happy to employ private companies to hide in vans with hidden radar parked on the side of roads etc & to encourage the police to hide in bushes etc & behave like children all in the pursuit of revenue however the general public are not allowed to use such tech in response to this blatant money grab. It's got so ridiculous here now that the NSW government have resorted to painting lines on the tarmac of some major highways & have helicopters above measuring the time vehicles take to travel between these lines & send you a fine out in the mail if you should creep over the archaic limits we have here. Cars increase dramatically in competency & safety as do the roads to a lesser degree however the limits stay the same as 30 years ago. The big issue here is driver training & ability, or the lack of it to be precise. I have been competing in Motorsport for the past 20 + years & as I regularly tell those that ask about Motorsport safety, "I feel much safer driving on track than I do driving to and from it". It will be interesting when the autonimous revolution takes hold & this income dries up, I guess the government will need to find some new way to fleece the public of their hard earned cash, but it's all in the name of public safety of course, cough cough.

I have an Uniden R3 and I like it. One feature I like on it compared to my older Escort (passport 9000ix I think?) is that you can tell it to be quiet when going under a certain speed. I set mine to 40mph. This helps so much in not having it constantly going off in the city.
It's still triggered by blind spot detectors on certain cars on the highway though. That's annoying because I think I read that wasn't going to happen with this model. Oh well. Not a deal breaker. |

I've had one of these for about 4 years now. Its got crazy long range, and with the GPS function and also using WAZE I've not had a single speeding tkt.

I have a Uniden R3 and I love it. The R7 is a little better, and perhaps the Max360 as well, but I wanted to shave a bit off the cost and this is more than sufficient for my needs.

I have a concealed K40 radar/laser detector with GPS and modules on the front and back of the car (installed by the first owner). It's my first detector but I'd say it works exceedingly well and I like that it's fully hidden so I don't have to deal with it and a dashcam.

I have the Escort 360 Max CI with an M3-mirror Radar Mirror display. I have not used any of the other options so no comparisons to offer.

Radar-Mirror
Radar Mirror integrates the display into the rear view mirror. They support multiple detector brands and multiple vehicle makes. It's an expensive option for a stand-alone detector but if you are getting a custom install it's a smaller portion of the overall. At the time they did not have an M2 mirror - I actually like the shape of the M3 mirror more though. . |

I just found out the hard way. If you're in the market for a radar detector and are leaning towards Escort, I would highly recommend only buying from them directly. They will not honor their 1-year ticket reimbursement policy if purchased say from the Escort Store on Amazon.

Alright another topic I have alot of experience with btw RDF is the place to go for radar detector info - not car forums. Ok so far I have owned like 20 radar detectors (some models more than once because I'm crazy and new serial numbers offer slight hardware revisions etc.
1) What region do you live in because some areas have different threats that you need to face, for example in Edmonton Alberta Canada they have insane speed enforcement literally the bleeding edge of the planet. They have things like MRCD where a standard escort detector will not be able to detect, they have mesta fusion another nasty low powered low frequency radar that standard detectors will just not even alert to, they have dragon eye laser and lidar traps that again detectors will either not alert or alert as they tag you etc. South of Edmonton in Calgary they have redflex where it is so low powered no radar detector can detect it with useable range, so you are screwed either way (untill radenso and their AI based theia comes out). That being said where you are located makes a huge impact on what you need. 2) Filtering: this will determine how many false alerts you get. Essentially the cream of the crop for filtering is: Redline 360C, pro m, and v1 g2. 3) Range: you're looking at the r7, v1g2, redline 360c (kind of), and r1/r3. 4) GPS lockouts: Everything GPS based (so no v1 unless you use a phone). 5) frequency range (what it can detect) if you face low power low frequency threats: r7, pro m, redline 360. If you face mrcd then the pro m is your only good choice. Overall that is a small snippet of what you need to factor in, but in essence if you want a set it and forget it detector get the redline 360c (it is the only escort detector that is not overpriced and has poor performance imo, every product before this one was pretty poor). If you want insane range get the r7. If you encounter mrcd get the pro m. If you like to tinker get the v1g2. When radenso launches Theia that imo will be the end all be all for detectors and can do everything perfectly.

Everybody waiting for Radenso Theia.
Till thats released, I went with the Uniden R7 and with the latest 1.35 firmware, it finally offers auto lockouts. Still not perfect but I'm very happy with it and occasionally Amazon has really good deals on it. |

Until then I have a pro m because I live in Canada, and encounter a crap ton of mrcd, and redflex. I drive to Edmonton too so yeah...
