The limited-edition BMW M2 CS is a track-focused iteration of the already fabulous M2 Competition, and it’s so good we couldn’t resist naming it as evo’s Car of the Year in 2020.

What’s to like? For starters, the CS has a 444bhp version of the TwinPower Turbo in-line six just like its bigger brother the M3/4, which means it will crack 0-62mph in four seconds dead. The extra power is backed up by adaptive M suspension, and you can spec the CS with manual gears as well as the double-clutch auto, the latter-equipped car being quicker by a couple of tenths to 62mph, though not our favoured option.

With 406lb ft from 2350rpm and an engine that revs out gloriously to 7000rpm, the CS absolutely flies. The superbly balanced chassis provides a fluid driving experience that, in the absence of stability control, encourages tail-out cornering attitudes even in third gear. Even the steering manages to impart some feel – a rarity in current BMWs – helping to cement the CS as one of the finest M-cars in recent memory.

I don't understand this list. The Golf was 5th and the 911R was 9th? They're kidding, right?

They are factoring in price and enjoyment relative to the segment that the particular car belongs to.

I see. Bang for the buck. Probably should be listed with the VW first then, or list the segments/price-points better. In any case, the M2CS is hardly a winner in the segment with the M2C 95% the same car for $35-$40K less, no?

It's a weirdo list. Seems to be mostly specialty models, but then a few oddballs thrown in.

So the M2CS wins COTY 2020 and then the all time list of Germans from Evo? It does sound a little like recency bias in action but take the win.

This is an epic accolade.

It will be hard for the G87 CS to top this. Talk about big (small) shoes to fill.

The GTI Clubsport S was 2nd to the R in 2016 car of the year. But I wonder if the R is really viewed as well in light of the GT4's and other Porches which are more attainable.

VW on the other hand, never made another Golf as good as that limited model and probably never will.

It's definitely a divisive list.

The M2C is in the honorable mention and the M2 CS is number one overall. Doesn't seem like that's the case then.

I don't see how any normal human with a normal mortgage could put the M2CS above the M2C, it's just not possible. If the list is made for rich people, sure, the M2CS is the clear winner of the two.

I am far from a rich man with a fairly sizable mortgage.

I'm a car guy at heart and make enough to cover the payment at 1.9%. When you factor in super low interest to purchase a car that will likely lose less than 10% of the value over 5 years even if driven with normal mileage, it's not a big stretch.

This does seem to be a special edition list, but pretty much all cars that I would like to own.

Edit: I like the M2C, but never a car I truly considered owning. I don't like the wheels or the stance which is $4-7K right there to upgrade. I think the interior is okay, but the CS touches make it much better. I still think it's a bargain, but not for me. If I hadn't snagged the CS, I'd likely be in a 6MT G80 forcing myself to get over the front grille.

I'm the same - was never looking at the M2C as coming from a M3 what was the point? The M2CS provided a road less travelled option to the G80 - and I'm pleased I went down that route.

Some folks by far less home than they can "afford". Do people get this much crap for buying boats?

"Value" is different for each person with cars because the equation includes how much you enjoy it. The M2C wouldn't be a great value for me because I've never had much desire for it. I completely love my M2 CS though, so it provides great value for me. I'm sure plenty of people don't understand why there is such a big difference for me, but I love all the upgrades and think the result is more than the sum of the parts.

Edit: Also in the US we aren't talking $40k difference, more like $26k difference if you aren't factoring in resale value at all. If factoring in resale value I think we could conservatively say the price difference is something like $10k in the US. Plenty of people blow $10k on car modifications etc.

Imagine for a second you could get an M2 CS for MSRP (going rate is more 95k-105k used). That top 10 list is as follows price wise (Including estimates on used prices):

1. M2 CS ($85k)
2. 718 GT4 ($105k)
3. 997.2 GT3 RS (~$250k)
4. 981 Cayman GT4 (~$90k)
5. GTI Clubsport S (not in US, ~£29k or $40k)
6. AMG GT R Pro (~$190k)
7. 987 Cayman R (~$85k for a 6 spd)
8. Audi R8 4.2 (~$80k-$90k)
9. 911 R (~$500k based on recent prices)
10. A45 AMG S (not in us, CLA 45 ~60k-70k)

The best German performance cars aren't cheap.

People seem to have problem with the idea that there is a better M2 based car that looks somewhat like the M2C with a similar engine but costs more and is garnering high praise. Journalists can say it's transformative, owners/drivers can say it's worth it, but people just refuse to believe it.

I remember EddieX (youtuber) had a review of his friends OG M2 after driving his other friends M2 CS. He asked his OG M2 friend if he was going to get a CS and he went "no it's too expensive for an M2". Later in the video EddieX goes "I thought the F87 M3 CS was not worth it over the M3 Comp, but the M2 CS was worth it over the M2 and M2C".

His friend didn't really seem to believe him (and had a look like he may have made a mistake underestimating the CS) and he just responded "you need to come out and drive it".

We should just give the award to the M235i/M240i then and all go home. It's 90% of the M2C with better exhaust note and much cheaper again. Definitely better value so should top the list.
