Help please. Strange oil in engine bay.

Hi everyone, just noticed some oil on this part of the engine bay. Anyone know what this might be? Thanks

It's cosmoline from the factory. Over time it leaks out of all the areas they sprayed it in because of heat. Just wipe off the excess and you're good.

You’ll see it leak onto the headlights too. Usually on a warm day.

Normal, same on mine - drips onto both headlights and some collected along the 'drip edge' recess on top of the front fenders in the engine bay as well. It's very resistant to being cleaned off - which is sort of the point of the material: to prevent corrosion. So it must be good stuff - but I wish BMW would have used... you know... paint... or some form of curing sealant instead of something that oozes out of it's nose on a hot day. Gross.

Be sure to try and clean it off as soon as you can, it can haze up a clear-wrap, I assume especially so if the sun bakes it on there. I've also had it seep out the exterior drip hole at the center of the rear trunk where it meets the bumper / latch - right in the center of the car. That left a hazy streak on a portion of my clear wrap, and dripped all the way down the bumper cover and onto the "diffusor." The wrap appears to be permanently 'stained' by it. It had probably been there a couple weeks until I finally saw the rear of my car after a period of time.

This happens on hot days when it get liquified by the sun and heat.

Cosmoline is some kind of dense petrochem. Try a petroleum based bug and tar remover (test it on a small area first, for a wrap).

As everyone else has said... it's cosmoline - normal, just clean it off with a towel/microfiber under the hood.

Can confirm it's cosmoline and normal. Happened on my 2021 M2C as well - I took it in to the dealer and all they did was clean it up and say it was normal.
