2021 Unsuccessful BootMod3 Tune. Does it show the flash attempt?

Hey Everyone,

Looking at a buying a 2021 and he let me know he bought a BootMod3 tune, tried to tune the car, but it was unsuccessful because the DME was locked.

Did this report a flash to the DME?

Meaning, even though it was a failed attempt, can BMW still see that? Wondering for warranty purposes.

Thank you!

Not sure about the attempt being logged but once tuned even if returned to stock BMW will know once they plug the car in for diagnostics during an oil change.

The only way to make sure is to bring it into the dealer and have them perform a pre-purchase inspection (PPI). I would do this regardless when buying a used car to make sure it has a clean bill of health. You should make sure you really want the car though as the PPI is not cheap, but worth it to ensure there are no major issues with the car and will be a good point of reference if you bring it in for service and something comes up. The seller might not agree to that and then it's up to you to accept the risk or walk away. I would walk at that point as it shows they are potentially trying to hide something.

Definitely agree here. My dealership charges $190 for the PPI which is basically an hour of labor. 100% worth it.

Thanks, everyone.
I paid a local indie BMW shop $100 for a DME diagnosis test and we went through the results.
Car didn't show anything as the attempt to tune failed previously.
100% worth the small cost.

If the DME is locked, it should show no flash in the ECU. I know its annoying, but the locked DME in 2021 models might be a pretty good reselling feature...

Except many people will use a piggyback tune that would arguably cause more damage. But, that would show on a PPI check too.
