A local shop posted a letter they received from NYS outlining enforcement of new legislation regarding aftermarket exhaust systems.

Can't sell them. Can't install them.

Does this affect sales from businesses outside of NY?

Beginning of the end?

Looks like a New York Vehicle code statute. For any given state you'd have to see if they have a similar statute if i get your question. Looks like it's effective tomorrow so you better hurry up lol.

I'm curious how this will affect sales from the interweb to customers in New York. I'm wondering if this will become like a lot of emissions laws in California. For instance, many things are listed as "not available for sale in California" due to CARB laws etc.

Probably will affect because exhaust is not a fun mod to install and for our cars, and probably a decent amount of others, no real hp gains. Just another reason not to mod exhaust there.

Thank the Harleys for this one.
Everybody likes a little sound, but hey if it makes your skin crawl when it drives by or it gets black flagged at a race track for sound, I would guess it's a bit too loud for the street.

Everything in moderation...

Harley guys have been doing straight pipes for decades. I know because I'm one of them and have been doing so for over 25 years.

It was actually car tuners and all the pops/bangs that finally led to this. Most of the complaints were in the burroughs and other densely populated areas but what happens in NYC often leads to statewide legislation.

I know locally the cars were repeatedly setting off the electronic "shots fired" detectors that the city installed so it was becoming a real headache (pun intended).

I've already got my catless DP, mid pipe and Remus for the M2 sitting on a shelf. I'm worried about future cars and upgrades as time goes on though. Also wondering if distributors will refuse to sell to NY?

The government in the UK is currently proposing similar legislation. So far there is an open petition of over 100k residents meaning it has to be debated in parliament. Even so, I don't hold much hope it will change.

Seems this 'approach' is working its way around the world. Call my cynical but I can't help but feel it's being lobbied and pushed by the big manufactures to stop people purchasing non-OEM parts and being able to upgrade their cars to perform better than their intended purposes.

No offense, but Harleys are the worst offenders for sure, by SPL. They are the only thing I can clearly identify from a half mile away.

Agree though that they probably aren't the drivers of this legislation. It's unfortunate that people kept pushing the envelope and triggered this. Time to visit NJ, CT, PA to get your exhaust installed I guess until they follow suit.

Wonder if M Perf systems can squeak by here?

Yup after having my AA EL Mid Pipe sitting in my living room for 6 months and after 4 local shops refusing to install it I gave up and sold it to a local board member.

I was also on the fence for many months hearing all of the complaints about the sound with the stock muffler so I caved and did not look hard enough for a shop here to do it.

I know they still exist though. Now whether they “should” be installing them in Nor Cal is another story.

No offense at all. "Loud pipes save lives" haha.

Although my straight-piped v10 literally can be heard a measured 1 mile away in the suburbs as reported by my wife 😳

Luckily I'm doing all the M2 install myself but my concern is just the general tightening of restrictions. Another nail in the ICE coffin I guess.

I live close to the road with a mountain view so all the harley dudes love to pass by and they are by far the worst and also because its 5 of them at a time. I seriously don’t know how you can enjoy that for hours on end. The pops and bangs ak45 kids are out there too but they stay mostly in the big cities, I am in the country.

This new law sucks but I am not totally surprised tbh. I do wonder if eventually ny will not let inspection pass if there is An aftermarket exaust (same as they do with tints)

And although I can’t stand the straight piped bikes I think this is being done because it of the pops bangs crew.

I always get pissed when I see a State/City trying to go after the autos, but somehow leave Motorcycles as they are.
My hearing is still good enough to know that bikes are MUCH LOUDER than cars in general. Yes there are some loud cars on the street and they should be fined under the existing laws, but why not bikes as well???
I have nothing against bikes but I'd like to see a equal playing field if your going to enact stupid laws like this one.
Harleys with their lower bass sound , then with straight pipes travels further than a higher pitched Cruising, or race bike. Especially when they ride as a group.
I'm not going to dispute that a louder bike probably alerts a motorist in many cases, but again lets make this equal for everything motorized and registered.

I'm a motorcycle rider and good sounding exhaust is music to my ears. However, the only vehicle that sets off all the car alarms on the street in my neighborhood is straight pipe Harleys...even I hate that noise.

I wish they'd limit it to NYC. I hate when the city restrictions affect the entire state. This just seems like another money grab as if the cops don't already have their hands full.

I would welcome someone doing something about all of the insanely loud exhausts on cars here in Northern VA. It's really nuts. That and catless downpipes. Abuse is putting reasonable mods at risk.

I have no problem with this. Loud exhausts are obnoxious. The stock M2C in sport+ is almost too loud to be civil.

Intake noise, however... Underrated, IMO.
