You'll have to check with your local dealership. China is a rather special case because of all the partnerships with other manufacturers (like Zinoro/Brilliance Auto).

A lot of policies and service offerings for the rest of the world don't apply in China because of those relationships.

I'm not aware of the included maintenance plan being offered in any market other than the United States

That's exactly what I did when I negotiated the price for my car back in April 2006. BMW dealers were not negotiating any deals on the "new" 3-series back then (and the economy was good too). So they gave the BS that the "free" maintenance was worth something like $1,800 (if you got brakes - LOL). I said I do all my own maintenance and don't need to prepay for maintenance. The SA replied, "If it's free, why would you go to the trouble..." I whipped out a pic of my E30 sitting on my lift. He took $900 off the price, without a hitch. And I was ordering the car, not buying one off the lot.

"Warranty" and maintenance are two different things.

-----

I drive an i3, doesn't really have much maintenance, brakes should last 200k, no MT clutch (though I do miss it) the disappointing thing here is the loss of 1 year. My REx is supposed to only have oil changed every 2 years (I plan to do it annually though, myself when not free), so that means only 1 will be free for those that buy 2017+.

I own an ACURA RSX TYPE-S since new and first brake job for all wheels was at 36,000 miles driving normally and not beating it down. So, I would think most bmws would need a brake job between 36k and 50k miles so that does hurt this maintenance plan especially since it seems the cost of it is around $1,100 (doing it yourself) - $2,100 at BMW dealership. It is a wake up call experience compared to the Japanese brands brake job that is $400 (doing it yourself) - $800 dealership. So, I'm not sure when people are mentioning that the 4th year for bmws maintenance program is a loss of $300-$400 only. Seems a bit more if a brake job is needed which I would assume most BMW owners do in fact need. I changed my spark plugs every 50k miles on my Acura so do bmws really hold up better and don't need changing every 40k-50k miles? I'm not referencing the crazy BMW proposed schedule. Is it even worth mentioning that walnut blasting is still not included in the maintenance? Seems the enthusiasts have done it every 30k-40k and noticed power and drive is significantly noticeable including the fact of all that carbon build up. Maybe BMW should at least acknowledge the carbon build up and ink use that in the proposed 36k maintenance program if taking away brake jobs. As people have mentioned taking a year of maintenance away does suck as an experience. To say you're going to consider another brand works one way, in my opinion, and that is if you will be switching to a non German brand where maintenance and brake jobs are much cheaper and less frequent because they're more reliable (Honda or Toyota as example). But to consider switching to Mercedes or Audi who don't even have a free maintenance comparable to bmws is a little overboard. Are you saying that choosing Audi or Mercedes over BMW made only bmws 4yr free maintenance the only difference between the brands? It wasn't the experience or reliability or features, etc? All I know is, Indy shop shopping would be my next step when I do buy BMW for 2017 will be my next logical choice because brakes are no longer included in bmws maintenance plan.

I would consider myself somewhere between the average car buyer and hardcore enthusiast who tracks their car - I will drive the car hard when possible but for the most part, it's a daily driver. I got around changing rotors and pads past 100,000km, when the sensor triggered. Total cost? Around $640 CAD tax incl.
  • 4 rotors ($400)
  • Front/rear pads w/ sensors ($240)

That's DIY with OEM parts from BMW and if you wanted to go aftermarket (but still OEM manufacturer), price of DIY can easily be between $500-$550. Note, this is all in Canadian dollars so in the States, it's probably even cheaper.

Never had any experience with M cars and how fast they go through brakes with normal driving but for base model cars (3er in my case), they last past the original 4 years/50,000 mile maintenance period with normal driving - something that 90% of buyers are probably doing.

Just curious, what is the average cost for replacing rotors and brakes on current model year M5? (Assuming they weren't covered under the maintenance program.)

According to Turner Motorsport, with all OEM parts: $2191.10 USD

No tax or shipping included. Explain that one to the wife

Anyone know how long brakes are expected to last on an M5 (or any M car) if they're used as just a daily driver as most of them are used for? $2,000 is a lot but if they last around 60,000 miles/95,000 km, that's not bad relative to the cost of the car.

On my E63 E63 M6, every 12-14 months if not tracking. If tracking then new OEM rotors every 4-6 track days with Cool Carbon Brake Pads. If I only do a couple of track days at a time then I change every 6 months.

A good relationship with your SA is necessary. As in every good relationship, a bit of give and take is necessary and when they tell me that I have to pay for something in relationship to tracking the car, I just pay.

Whaaaaaaaaat....

A brake change every year with daily driving? Not that I couldn't afford the brakes but I don't think I would want to do a brake job every year. It's not difficult but it's extensive relative to fluids. A year is not that long when you're talking about parts on a car.

Anybody else have a similar or different experience?

I drive hard.
I forgot to include that this includes one, 'Spirited Drive' per month with a group of like minded enthusiasts.

seriously no brakes before 50k??? I'm on my third set at 48k now in my 2013 x5.

the maintenance plan was the reason I went with BMW for the truck instead of another company. oh well.

Okay. It does seem X5s (probably X6s, but there are fewer of them) are significantly more prone to this situation. Curious, what would you have chosen instead of an X5 if the brake coverage had not been available? Why would you have chosen that vehicle over the X5?

I think the clutch can last a long time if it isn't abused. My 2009 135 had 80k on it and the clutch had little wear.

Honestly, I don't care. BMW's maintenance schedule is a joke, especially for M cars. When my M5 and M coupe were under this plan, I was paying for extra oil changes, diff/tranny oil changes, etc. Most of the stuff covered under the old plan but not the new one will last beyond the four years anyway. You will probably get a few windshield wiper blade replacements out of the old plan...In the end the "free" maintenance is a marketing ploy. I wish they'd do away with all of it, cut the cost of the cars by $500 and let owners decide how to maintain their cars.

+1

My E39 M5 has been my daily driver for over 11 years. I'm at 94K miles now. A few years ago, when it probably had 75K miles on it, I needed to replace the throw-out bearing as it was creaking. While I was there I decided to replace the clutch given the labor involved. I (and the my mechanic) was surprised how much life was left in the clutch when it was pulled. The E39 M5 can eat catches for lunch if you don't know what you are doing. Foot OFF the clutch before you engage full throttle.

FYI I went 95,000 on my front brakes and at 108,000 still have plenty on my rear shoes on my E90. I purchased my car, but since the majority of the people lease for 3 years based on my track record you would be fine. Even though my car has mostly highway miles to and from work every day, I am typically stuck in stop and go traffic for about 1/4 of my commute. Compared to the previous Nissans I had driving the say route, BMW wins hands down in my first experience with the brand.

Never with a BMW. But as I've posted before, I bought a brand new 2014 MB E550 for the spouse and am now on my THIRD set of rotors....in 18,000, just over two years. They start to shimmy every 9,000 miles. All city, normal driving, not riding brakes or traversing the hills. It's infuriating that I have to fight to get them to pay for them. Because contrary to what Mercedes tells me, brake rotor replacement every 9,000 miles is not "standard wear and tear" IMO.
You guys tell me if I'm being unreasonable.
