Went with the ‘get it while you still can’ mantra, as you can’t even get a non-M BMW with a manual anymore

Agree with many owners on DCT vs manual. However if you're a MT diehard like me, a few instrumental modifications can get you the feel starting with just the basics.
1. BM Clutch Stop 2. M Performance Shift Knob 3. AutoSolutions custom SSK 4. UC adjustable Pedal I did the first and immediately for $10 it was a no brainier. I did the second one recently (see my review post) and the shift feel is definitely more tactile now. I plan on doing the other two as well. https://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...php?p=26837099

This video is a great explanation of the feel of a DCT vs auto or manual. Highly recommended.

Good info on DCT but no comparison to the MT in this video, only referenced why he chose DCT.

That's what I'm thinking too. Drive a manual while I still can. I don't care if it's faster or slower. I want to go old school. I am switching from a Tesla - I want to have fun driving again. But I wonder if I will regret it after the old school thing wears off.

If the novelty wears off, there will be plenty of buyers lining up to buy from you. If it doesn't, you continue to enjoy the car. In either scenario you end up driving a manual for as long as it's fun for you. But this only happens if you buy now.

I daily drove a 6MT G35 Coupe for 8 years then sold it and daily drove a 6MT M235i for 6 years. After 14 years of manual, I switched to DCT for my M2C as I was just tired of it (LA traffic). I'll probably switch back to 6MT for my next car if it's still around and keep alternating until it disappears.

Is there any data on the longevity and reliability of the Manual vs DCT? I have read and watched some scare stories about DCT in general. I'm about to get the DCT. But I plan to keep this car a very long time so if the Manual is better long term I will switch.

The software has improved ten fold since my e92 M3 DCT. I find the DCT in the M2C as close as you can get to perfect. I have a P car with PDK also for comparison.

Have you ever considered doing a DCT transmission flush? I saw some people recommend it every 40K miles. Maybe it's a thing of the past?

This is based on me looking for used options before buying new. They depreciate about the same percentage from MSRP (from my experience). Maybe it's market dependent. But yeah go drive them and see which one you like better. |

Also depends on where you live. In the UK there is a significant tax penalty for taking the manual as it sits in a different emissions bracket.

I owned a 17 M2 manual and recently traded that in for a 21 M2C DCT.
Manual is a joy to drive - connected driving experience - just plain fun... until you hit traffic. The traffic in my area (Dallas) has gotten so bad - it reminds me of Los Angeles now. DCT - it is quick. The car is so much faster and the shifts are insanely smooth and instantaneous. Manual felt 'faster' at slower speeds but DCT you can lose awareness of how fast you're going sometimes. Do I miss the manual? Yes, right until I hit traffic. If I garaged 2 cars, I would get the M2 in manual for the weekend. Love both cars and perhaps I'm in the minority that preferred the original M2's exhaust note. |
