At that point, 32 years into the relationship, I'd keep her until the end and leave her to someone who I know will appreciate her!

I held on to my first BMW, an E36 318is, which I took delivery of at the BMW Niederlassung on Frankfurter Ring in March of '96 before the Welt was even an idea, for 27 years. When I moved back to the US last year, I shipped 2 cars and had another car and truck here so the 318is had to go. There wasn't anything special about it but it was special to me (it never once let me down) and I really regret letting it go.

I think Audi is underappreciated here in the US in general but maybe in this case, it's because Audi doesn't have a small, 2 door coupe to line up against the M2 (the TT isn't the same thing). I have been fortunate to have spent a considerable amount of time on the Autobahn and let me tell you, 95 times out of 100, the guy blowing your doors off is driving an Audi!

I wish, but my son isn't into cars at all. Maybe he'll change his mind.

I do have cars I regret selling for sure, but my '89 Conquest is the one I miss the most. I think I'll miss that car until the day I die.

Yes, perspective for sure. I've never been on the Autobahn, and I'm rarely over 100 mph, so the sideways-style of the M2 really works for me. I grew up on high-powered, RWD manual cars going sideways at ever opportunity, so the M2 is just what the doctor ordered.

Well, yes, and no. I live in a small town, and do my share of hooning, but it's always on the smooth backroads near my home. When I was younger, yes, I was an idiot and drove foolish in town, but that was a long time ago.

I've never caused an accident, but I did have 30+ tickets before I was 30 years old. I almost feel bad that I've never had a ticket in the M2. Almost.

Backroads are the best and the M2 is very tailhappy so I understand you 😍

Yes, maybe so!

My 12-year-old son cannot wait to learn to drive stick shift in the M2!

My 9-year-old son, on the other hand, is probably in the “meh, whatever” camp.

Yeah, believe me, I understand.

That’s probably why I have not added it all up.

Does one include the cost of a daily driver?

I didn't include my daily in the price because I use the daily for other things. I daily drove this car for 3 years, and that cost (Winter wheels/tires/etc) is included. I remove both the Exige and M2 for 3 months during the Winter now, which saves me $625.

I’m the same I can’t help spending.
I try and keep the miles down, which then makes me think is it worth having such a nice car I rarely drive.
My cost per mile must be crazy high
I’m trying to do more track days.
And more enjoyable scenic drives

if you genuinely keep it forever it’s worth it.
If you don’t it’s painful, and probably best to keep it standard,
Standard Ish haha

Keeping mine forever. I owe nothing on it. It's just keeps looking better and better as new cars come out Inc BMW's! Next car will likely be far more comfortable and practical as a DD and keep the M2 for track experiences and social drives.

I love the arteon and arteon shooting brake!

997.2S with a blower, suspension, seats, harnesses, roll bar, aero, and some big wheels and tires. Woof.
The problem with 997.2 even is that the engine will eventually exhibit bore scoring and require expensive sleeving and rebuild. People will tell you that 9A1 does not bore score but it's still a problem and the Alusil is basically the same as in the later M97. Maybe it's not a big deal if you get one at lower mileage and don't put a ton on.

Is there a reason you can't drive the M2 more? Use it on some of your daily drives?

I don't want to know how much I've spent. Wheels, coilovers, stage 2 bolt-ons, exhaust, carbon bits, steering wheel... it never ends! We get ripped for parts here in Australia, it would be a scary spreadsheet and my wife would kill me if she ever saw it lol.

Perfection and preservation.

For some guys ownership of this type of car is all about the drive, for others it's the modding, the culture, the status or a tool to be used. I enjoy it for all those reasons as well, but I'm somewhat different in the fact that above all else my first priority with something I love is always preservation. I don't just want that experience now, I want it forever. If I had all the money in the world I'd build another M2 exactly like the one I have and likely never drive it at all, just so I knew I'd always have that perfect experience, waiting to be consumed just as I remembered it.

I've heard a car driving rotation I like when you have multiple toy cars from Matt Moreman (Obsessed Garage guy). Every week he drives a different car, and only that car. Rain or shine. Then on Sunday, he cleans it up, puts the cover on it, and gets the next one out for the following week.

I don’t have a multi car “problem” at the moment, but someday when I have multiple sports cars at the same time, I will probably employ this method.
