Also, can we note that the CS will be MY 2019, with delivery starting in 2018. This thing is still almost two years away! Last edited by ried; 11-30-2016 at 12:49 AM.. |

So for those of us who are completely satisfied with the power output of the current M2, are there any other reasons to go for an M2 S55 car? Certainly NOT the noise but maybe throttle response? Decreased lag? Glitzy engine bay?

The S55 is a more "special" motor compared to the N55. The S55 has more M character (I've also had E36, E46, E90, M3's)... dry sump, more mechanical feel/character, its more special, its a bespoke motor, the N55 is not. In comparison it makes the N55 motor feel "regular". I've also had a few mezger motors so I totally get the whole bespoke motor thing. I also like the sounds of the F80 M3 much better. Less deep tuner special exhaust sounds, more mechanical noises from engine and exhaust. N55 is nice and all, but S55 all day every day. |

S55 doesn't have a dry sump....AFAIK none of the street M3 in the past had it. N55 is smoother but feels way less powerful*, that's for sure So a mild tune/IC/DP whatever and you're good to go with N55(?) *on top end. low/midrange the N55 feels more powerful/less lag. Cheers Robin |

i agree the N55 feels smoother but this isnt a good characteristic to me. i like the rough and edgy feel of the S55, more mechanical. i prefer this to the more 'normal' feeling N55 which arguably is "smoother" I totally agree the S55 feels MUCH more powerful! |

Don't get me wrong here, I believe the car will have many other performance OPTIONS that can take the M2 CS over the M3/4 price tag. As OP stated, ceramic breaks and other performance additions may be OPTIONS. Engine and aerodynamics will be standard (S55, splitter, spoiler, CF roof, etc.) These are all STANDARD on current M3/4's. So how can an M2 CS cost more than the M3/4?? (which does not have a detuned S55, is bigger, and more luxurious). Again, all just my opinion and thought process. |

Another interesting take which suggests CS will take over the current model M2, as opposed to a limited run or additional variant:

Probably, but I'm no stranger to depreciation hits due to my pervasive vehicular ADHD! Hell, I just unloaded my '16 Jag F-Type Coupe R after only 10 months of ownership--talk about a "hit!" Then again, it was a six figure Jag, so it wasn't unexpected.

Number one on list of the largest BMW dealer in US with deep connections to BMW corporate. Their info is-M2 CS is real. S55 motor with other bits. It initially is approved only for Europe, although I cant imagine how this won't be coming to us in the USA. No idea on price or what happens to base M2. Is base M2 gone? Do all versions get S55? B58 for base car? No one knows.

From what I've heard we will be seeing an S55 M2 starting in MY2018, so around summer/fall of calendar year 2017. The buzz on the German forums is that the N55 will no longer meet the euro new car emissions requirements starting in early 2018 so it looks like BMW will finally retire the N55, not to mention it's only being used in the current M2 and the X4M40i, which will be getting the B58 next year.
Also, apparently there will NOT be a GTS version, a hardcore CSL version will probably be released closer to the end of F80/82 production. The CS will most likely not be super hardcore and will be similar to a competition package. FWIW.

EDIT: Also, if it's emissions related, that starts in 2018 like you said. Europe operates on a calendar year. So their 2018 calendar year is our actual MY2019. Last edited by blackholescion; 11-30-2016 at 07:56 AM.. |

That would be a very aggressive move by BMW to put the S55 in the M2 so quickly.... essentially 7-10 months from now? Seems too quick...
