Would love to see it with the DCT but from what I have been reading they are getting pretty amazing performance from the ZF8 when programmed for high performance, perhaps to the point that it is a better option than some DCT transmissions. We may actually see a trend where conventional auto transmissions are used in performance cars (C7 Z06, M235i etc)

Awesome! Consider me a hold out for the M2!

I have put myself in a position to afford an M3 with a few options.

However, will the M2 be a better value without missing out on anything???

I am not ready to make a purchase for another 12+ months...Anyone else in a similar buying position??

Even though it is a year plus away, I have been obsessing over it

Honestly, I was hoping for an M2 with a 4 cylinder turbo, pushing more power than the M235i and weighing less than a M235i with carbon pieces fitted.

Oh well, if it's true that these will be limited, I'll skip the M2 and get an M3 instead after my M235i

That's just dumb. Make as many as people want. Don't create this artificial situation where interested people can't get one.

Because that's exactly what happened with the 1M. It would be a shame if this is true...
I don't think it will be a limited production run this time. The 2 series launched this year and I think the M2 will hit the market not later than the 2 series facelift, so there would be minimum 3 years left to buy one. Meanwhile I bet on a 2 series Gran Coupé and M2 GC too - the competition shows what the customer wants and BMW just wanna sell the M235i Coupé, M3 and M4 before the (M)2 GC launches.

So if you're interested in a NA M car
You're out of luck

Why would you make 3 cars that are all turbocharged?
It's now simply a matter of how large do you want it
You've got your small in the m2
Medium in the m3/4
And large in m5/6

Couldn't they have made on model for the fans of NA engines?
A highly tuned 4 cyl engine in a light weight body?
With all the talk about how advanced BMW is with carbon fiber manufacturing
You'd think they could come up with some shared parts to make this happen

I am excite.

I'd be surprised though that this will just be an upgraded N55.

To those that have been following the development of the 2 series, what's the major difference between the M235 and the M2? Seems like power plant and tranny options will be similar, and the M235 is the one getting the club racer option. No sure what the marketing strategy is from BMW aside from the over saturation of the M brand??

X3, i really hope they shove the s55 detuned to around 370-390hp. This would make a perfect daily driver for me and i could keep the E92 M3 as my weekend toy since i love the s65

What's the hate on the n55? It makes gobs of tq down low and with a properly sized turbo plus w/e "BMW Upgrades" could be a great fit. And to the NA guys it's simple, turbos are dominating the markets. You can get both fuel efficiency and lots of power/tq and keep up with what's trending in the auto industry, why stray?

I am hoping that's the case - but the original poster was saying limited production might be in the cards.

If so, I think it would be a big mistake, as BMW will be able to sell as many of these as they want to make. Just like they could have with the 1M.

Interesting. It makes almost no sense to use:

1. A front heavy 6 cylinder on such a light car, when they can squeeze the same power rating out of a 4

2. A 6 year old n55

We shall see. I'll be happy if they make it work. I'm a big fan of the n55 as it is. Apparently, so is the ///M division with this news, and with the use of the s55 in the upcoming f80/82.

Anyone that had the N54 (myself included) would be able to tell you that these engines, while rated the same, were not the same in reality. N54 > N55 and now the N55 is getting long in the tooth.

Plus, generally people want something different (aka special) in an M car.

This was possible with the 1M because the internals started out stronger with the N54 to begin with, and then the M guys made more upgrades.

Similar with the S55 in the new M3/4 - significant changes to the original N55, which would be necessary for those levels of power.

My current N55, while a good engine, seems to run out of breath much sooner than my N54. No one wants that in an M2.

Just my $.02

Note from the link in the OP that this particular N55 engine will be shared with the X4 40i model and I'm guessing other 40i cars such as possibly a 440i and 640i or maybe M performance M440i

This is the high end N55 which should be good for 360 HP. The regular 35i cars will have moved on to the B58 by then.

Thank you BMW for listening to your customers!!

OP does not say that the M2 will be limited production. He says the info he has access to is "limited".

The 1M Coupé made sense too, and this round they've got more development time. Wasn't the N55 already out when the 1M with the N54 came to the market?!

But look at it like that the N55, thanks to the experience with it is more reliable and it requires time to optimize it for this stage of development.

I'm still waiting for some spy shots with a peek under the bonnet or something like that, because I don't wanna celebrate too soon but it's definitely a good sign (for me).

When I was at the Autoweek 4 series test drive in August I had a BMW engineer tell me that the N54 was more powerful than the N55, however they can ring almost as much power from the N55. The made was done for fuel consumption. I'll let you know if my 335hp N55 435 fitted with a PPK us faster than my e92 N54 PPK in two weeks..
