Q1 - Was driving an S2000 for a few years, absolutely loved it, but at some point you outgrow a convertible, and I wanted something a bit more powerful and with more luxury. Had to be rear wheel drive and a coupe, not many options when I started looking, Mustang, Z, WRX, couldn't afford a Porsche. Always liked the look of BMW's and when I drove the 135i I was hooked immediately. Drove and loved that car for 8 years. When maintenance started getting too costly decided to upgrade to the M2.

Q2 - Absolutely none. I'm a dedicated BMW driver now. Doubt I will ever buy anything else.

Q1: What made you buy your first BMW?
A1:Physics. My first BMW was a 128i M Sport. I needed a daily driver to take my 997.2 off DD duty and leave it for the track/mountain drives. The 128i was the only single car that fit my requirements for weight, weight distribution, displacement, exterior dimensions and vehicle passenger capacity (needed rear seats that fit adults comfortably)

Q2: Do you have any regrets?
A2: Definitely not. Was never much interested in BMW but now I've seen the light. I hope to always have a BMW coupe for my daily driver to complement my sports car.

Q1: What made you buy your first BMW?
A1: Since 1974 I had owned mostly just American muscle: 3 Camaro Z28s and 3 Mustang GTs, plus a '65 Corvette 396 and '71 Olds 4-4-2 W-30 thrown in - all manual V8s. Was always curious about the "ultimate driving machine" and was ready for a change. Ordered a 2015 M235i 6-speed and went with the Performance Center Delivery. Biggest change from all my previous cars was finally owning a car with good grip and a luxury ride at the same time.

Q2: Do you have any regrets?
A2: Yes, two actually. One, the M2 came out the next year, and while nice, the M235i was not a real M car. Two, just could not get past the lack of LSD - first car I had ever owned in 40 years of driving without one. Eventually couldn't take it anymore, and traded the M235i for the Camaro 1LE.

After 3 years with the Camaro, seriously considering an M2. The Camaro is a riot to drive and has an exhaust note to match, but it just has too many ergonomic shortcomings.

Q1: The first one I bought was the M2. But my family has been driving BMWs since the 1600. We are Munich but moved to the US in the mid 90s when I was a tiny tike. I learned to drive stick on my Grandma's old E39 520i in the Alps when I turned 18 and could use my US license in Germany. Fun Fact: Not so fun when you are in the Austria in the Alps and cylinder #5 decides to just give out. Now you get to drive from just south of Garmisch back to Munich on 5 coke cans instead of 6. So instead of 130 HP you have even less.

I always got my cars as hand me downs from my parents. When I graduated college my dad decided as a final "You are now off my pay role, thank god! Never ask me for money again" gift he let me any BMW for under 50k to do ED on. Weirdo me chose a 328d F31 and still love it.

When my wife's civic she had been driving since she was 16 was starting to get pretty long in the tooth so last year for her birthday we bought our M2. We now share the F31 and the F87 much more than before and it is no longer a his car/her car situation. (Thank god she is a car person. She learned to drive stick and do doughnuts in her dads 180HP karmann ghia when she was 13)

Q2: Part of me always thinks of getting an M2C instead of the OG M2 but I do love the N55 sound so much more and my wife hated the M2C seats because she is pretty small and they feel too big for her. In the end there is no real use for the extra power on the street and we don't track the car or do AutoX nearly enough to have it be missed there.

An E46 is nothing like an Elise. Too bad you couldn't appreciate them both for their inherent qualities.

And as far as damaging, that's mostly for idiots. And I'm being honest. My insurance company flat out told me that over 80% of their claims were for PARKED cars. It's not a Camry, don't park it ANYWHERE. Most of the rest were for boy racer idiots that think they can track day because they have A048's. They can't. So few are accidents on the road.

I've had mine for 11 years, not a single issue with a parking lot or a track...as I don't go to either.

I am chuckling at the irony of you chastising me for not appreciating the inherent qualities of the Lotus, and then you mention you don't use your car at the track . . . . The biggest appeal of my E46 M3 is exactly the point you make -- it is nothing like the Elise.

To be clear, I used mine at the track, and it was a "good" car for the job. Not the best, for my circumstances, because I don't trailer my cars to HPDE events, and the Elise space limitations required an awful lot of compromises .

I also didn't care for the amount of attention my Kryton coloured Elise garnered. I didn't think I would mind constant conversations with strangers about cars, but it turns out I was wrong.

It's great you are enjoying yours. That's what it is all about. But I don't miss mine at all.

Q1: What made you buy your first BMW?
A1: 1991 M-technic convertible ( only 500 were shipped to the US

Q2: Do you have any regrets?
A2: should have bought the E30 M3 instead

10 years later

Bought a E46 M3 convertible instead of the coupe. LOL

Ended up buying the 2020 M2C during the early days of the Pandemic. NO Regrets. Wink wink. (CS)

No other manual transmission RWD options for $45-60k, drove M2 and it gave me the same feeling as my IS300 and s2k did. Not similar cars by any means, but had that "thing" where you know it's the right car. It just fit.

No regrets as of yet, but build quality is at the back of my mind. No lie, every time I walk to the M2 I wonder if today will be the day I see a CEL.

Buy new.
Don't modify.
Don't drive like an idiot (bouncing off the limiter constantly).

No worries on a CEL.

People create CEL's, the car usually doesn't.

It doesn't matter which BMW you have or when it was purchased, all that matters is that it was your FIRST one.

I've always been a Japanese car guy, the size, the look, the feel, and the quality/inexpensive maintenance were very attractive to me. So why did I buy an M2? The combination of the M2's more classically-styled (not quite as square) look, fantastic sound, power, reliability, and FINALLY more friendly interior were too much for me to ignore. My only regret was not getting one with less miles and PPF.

So how about you?
Q1: What made you buy your first BMW?
A1:
Alcohol and the reviews in Autoweek (1994)

Q2: Do you have any regrets?
A2:
Selling my E30M3, E46M3, E46 ZHP, E90M3

Having tried out all the competition, the M235i was the most fun and best value car I could find.

Regrets? Well they came out with the M2 less than a year after I bought my M235i. Three years later I jumped for the M2C. It was a great choice, no regrets.

Riding in my brothers e46 3series. Rode like butter at 90mph+, features, 6MT trans. Realized used BMWs didnt have to be super expensive. Bought a 2000 323i, moved onto a e92 335i bc I couldn't swing the M3. Had nothing but issues in the 335 so left BMW for a few years but got roped back in by the F80 M3. Just nothing else compared for the price. M3 got totaled so here I am in a 2021 M2C.

The getting rid of the 323i at the time was a mistake. Should have gone into a e46 M3 instead of the 335 but I wanted some newer tech. No regrets with M3 or M2C
