Heads up! TPMS disabled turning off DSC
Lowered tire pressures for track. Turned DSC off Start first session and DSC turns back on Realized if TPMS light comes on it doesn't allow DSC to stay off. Do reset the TPMS so you don't get as frustrated as I did missing a session.

I was looking into coding and noticed that TPMS can be disabled ( #16), this might be the easiest way to track the car.....as for street use, I drove for 30 years without it and used my right foot and a tire gauge instead.

Yeah it's so obnoxious. Happened a few times yesterday at the track. But realized all you have to do is initiate the TPMS to reset and DSC will stay off

I usually start my sessions on low pressure, like 25-26 since the tires will heat up 10+ lbs on track....so how do you "reset" if you start each session with low pressure.....won't it trigger a warning and revert to comfort mode?

It's in the settings. And I realized as long as you start the reset process the DSC will stay off. I'm the same as you. I've been starting around 27psi then the light comes on. So go to setting, reset TPMS and it will show a percentage It doesn't need to be complete for DSC to be able to stay off.

Anyone knows what happens if we use wheels without TPMS sensors? Will the car throw a code and DSC cannot be turned off?

I don't think Canadian cars have TPMS so it's probably not something to worry about, my 2014 228i definitely does not have TPMS and I don't think it has been brought back to Canada.

Canadian M2s do not have TPMS sensors in each wheel. You can tell because the valve stems are rubber, not metal. Canadian cars use an indirect TPMS, which senses differences in rotation rates of each wheel via the ABS system. My 135i uses the indirect system and I have never had the TPMS light come on at the track even after dropping the cold pressures up to 10 psi.

Holy crap. Bump because I'm curious about the answer to this! I have to admit that I'm chuckling seeing these TPMS issues and happy that I don't have them on track in my 1M. My track wheels DO NOT have TPMS sensors. On the 1M I can leave the paddock and the light comes on to warn me the sensors are not there ( usually about 1-3 laps in ) and I can continue to run with no issues. If the M2 can't do this ... ill be keeping my 1M a looooooooooooong while. I wouldn't pay extra to add TPMS sensors to my track wheels just so the car can micromanage me ! You M2 guys have to dodge tpms issues and defeat the front collision warning each session... It's hard enough for me to remember to start my gopro! |

What is involved in getting TPMS and collision warning coded out? Exactly who can do this and what equipment is need. I am assuming a dealer would not do it?

**update**
Ran the M3/4 stock 18's (they had the tons sensors but apparently didn't work or link up with the car) so basically ran it without the TPMS at the track and it's so much better. DSC would stay off the whole time, no issues. Didn't need to do any resets. So if you were worried about running track wheels without it, no need. |

The problem with disabling TPMS on the track is that if you get a puncture at speed, especially early in a session, you have no way of knowing and could cause a serious mishap. Happened to me twice. Just reset your pressures early enough before your session to allow you to reset it.

" no way of knowing " other than the 5 senses that you were born with... Unfortunately, drivers are becoming quite a bit less educated about how a car should or shouldn't feel from the seat of your pants or what to do in such situations. If the handling of your car changes while driving it (and this certainly happens with a low tire ) one should definitely stop and check it out. What's happened to you twice ?? You've had two punctures while on track ? I've had a student hit rumble strips and destroy a tire. I actually heard the air hissing from the tire before the 2010-11 version of BMW even registered low tire. I've had another go off and get dirt and grass in the bead of the tire which caused it to go immediately flat. |

FYSA - Another potential issue for 2017+ cars - according to Keith at Tire Rack, if the the 2017 US cars cant find the TPMS transponders, the car goes into comfort mode only. I learned this during the purchase of my winter wheelset.
I hadn't considered the possibility of a coding out solution, and sprang for another set of transponders. Certainly not what you want at the track. Keith said this was a new trait of the 2017 MY cars. |
