Is it okay to take M2C drifting with only 700 miles on it?
Hi all, just purchased a 2021 M2C and have put around 700 miles on it. Would there be any downsides to take it drifting before the 1200 break-in service? I would keep the RPMS pretty low as I would just be practicing. Thanks!

One of the main things they change at 1,200 miles is the differential oil, I would wait until after break-in.

At 700 miles your car is well past broken in. Drift away!

Oh really? Splain please - make sure you cover how they use different oil in the differential. Because I don't believe that is true and it seems to be part of your reasoning.

I might wait until break-in service personally, but I doubt it will really hurt anything.
I agree with doug_999, I have never seen any evidence the differential oil is different or a special break-in lubricant out of the factory on any of the M cars. This rumor has been around for 20 years now. I'm happy to change my opinion if there is hard evidence to the contrary. |

As some people have said, it’s best to wait until after the RIS as the differential oil is changed.

I say DO IT! Break it in hard and fast, and it will last. That's been my philosophy on all of my cars so far with no issues. My signature says it all "Redline a day keeps the mechanics away"
700 miles is plenty. I had a few of my cars at redline with under 100 on the ODO.

It's been long ago proven that they do not use any special break-in lubricants but the myth continues.

I'd say wait. During the break-in service they read the DME and it will report any significant acceleration/deceleration events and any excursions past 4500 RPM. They won't void the warranty, but if you have a significant drivetrain warranty claim later on they might use it as an excuse to claim abuse.

Read the manual. It is 5,500 rpm. And that's plenty to drift with

700 to 1200 is a nice Sunday drive; 250 out, a nice social distancing lunch, and 250 back.

Absolutely do not do this. Your diff is going to get chewed up by that. That first round of oil is already going to have a significant amount of metal in it from the initial break in process.
Just wait the 500 miles so your engine can be revved out and your first round of diff fluid is drained. It's not worth the damage. |
