Bad to change rears but not fronts?

My rear PSS' are really getting down in tread but front have much more left. Any reason NOT to change just the rears only and change the fronts separately down the road? Also, what do you all think if I change the rears to PS4s while leaving the current PSS's up front?

Thanks!

You can replace rears without changing the fronts but I wouldn't reccomend mixing and matching. Either get 2 new PSS or 4 new PS4S.

I really hope this isn't that way anymore with F87.

Doing this on E46 330Ci made DSC go completely nuts and made the car pretty undriveable.

It seems that DSC somewhat assumed that either front and back are the same or rear was less. But front less that rear gave you plenty of scary moments in curves...

If you're not driving the car at it's limits, it's not gonna matter. If it's a daily driver, you won't... I have no qualms about keeping the front or having mixed front and rears. I'm not made of money to take a loss selling my used but good fronts so I can have new matching tires each time.

I still have original Contis up front due to much remaining tread. I can't justify throwing them out just for the purpose of upgrading to PS4S to match my rears. The car rides fine even given the ~50 mm width front/rear difference.

This is exactly what I would do. Mixing tire type can be really dangerous in the rain.

How so?

Edit, I also want to clarify my previous statement about me having no qualms with mixing front/rear tires. I'm talking about tires in the same performance category with the similar tread patterns, ratings, compounds, and uses. And the aim would be to buy matching front tires after they wear out.

I'm facing a similar situation, PSS on the rears are pretty much at the wear bars while the fronts still have plenty of tread left. The OCD in me wants to swap all four to PS4S but the wallet is saying otherwise.

Oh first world problems.

I ended up just swapping the rears with same PSS and once those wear the fronts will be done and I'll change all 4 then. Seemed like the more prudent thing to do financially.

That is exactly what I would have suggested. BTW you will be surprised at what an upgrade the 4S is, pretty impressive how much tire technology is advancing. Nothing wrong with the Super Sport but the 4S is a new level. Michelin rep described them as close the the previous version of the cup tire in the dry and I would tend to agree.

I lost the tire lottery and got the horrific Conti's, dumped all 4 at the same time, fronts had 10,000 or more left in them but there was no way I was going to stay on those pieces of crap. The upgrade between Conti's and the 4S is shocking.

as long as the front pair are the same as each other and the rear pair are the same as each other, you will be fine.

however, if your rears are wearing faster than the front, you're not taking corners hard enough lol.
