Model 3
A friend of mine is an engineer at Tesla and he recently received his Model 3 performance edition RS sport package dual motor (I made up most of that). It really is a a dual motor, extended range, auto-pilot. A woman at work has a single motor edition. I've looked over hers a bit, and drove my friend's car.
Some of the chatter you hear about fit & finish seem to be true. None of the bumpers seem to line up exactly right, on her red one the paint doesn't match on one of the doors, some of the trim is coming loose. His car didn't seem to have paint issues, but was gray and dirty. On the 3, you can unlock it (and drive it) with either a RFID card or your phone via bluetooth. There is no RFID sensor on the passenger side. So if you're on a date, make sure you bring your phone. I'm an old fart, so I don't always carry my phone when I go out. Equipped as it was, MSRP was around 73K. My super-deluxe stick-everything-on-it-that-you-can-that's-made-of-carbon-fiber-or-has-an-M-badge M2 had an MSRP of 66K. The Model 3 is quicker 0-60, presumably will lap Willow Springs faster and is much, much quieter, both in road noise, wind noise and of course, exhaust noise. The ride on the M2 is more refined, although with a shorter wheelbase is a bit more choppy. The 3 handles surprisingly well, with a low CG and low profile tires. On the 3, I miss not having an instrument panel, and the controls on the steering wheel vary in function depending on what option the HUGE control panel is on. Model 3 is all about the torque. Noiseless, effortless bountiful torque. The seats in the 3 were surprisingly comfortable and supportive. Softer leather than on the M2 with a softer cushion as well. We're both thin guys and it fit us well. Larger folks may have problems. The steering on the Model 3 is mostly better than the M2. I'm going to give the nod to the Bimmer for better feedback (what little there is) but the Tesla is smoother and doesn't feel as boosted. I have considered the model S in the past, but the price and luxury/features/quality were not a good match. Plus I have range anxiety. If it weren't for the quality issues, supposed problem with replacement parts and unknown resale values, I'd consider the 3 for my next purchase. For right now, I just run too much blue and white in my veins to change. Plus, I like to shift and I do enjoy the sound of an inline 6 singing at high revs. The sublime quiet of an electric car is neat, but sometimes you just want to let the inner redneck come out and play.

Good analysis - very fair. I own both cars.
I prefer the Model 3 as a daily driver with more torque than I can use and I prefer the M2 for spirited, fun driving. Having both is amazing.

I've given the Model 3 Performance a seriously long look. Not sure if I can get beyond the range anxiety also. Just can't see myself rolling up to someone's door and asking if I can plug into a 120v outlet to get 1 mi. per hours charge in an emergency.

That anxiety can be real! I'm still waiting for the electricians to get my NEMA circuit installed so I'm living on 5 miles per hours charging via 120. But I do know 20-25 miles per hour on public charging is available most everywhere now should I need it. My comfort level is increasing.

I considered replacing my F80 with a Model 3. I've test driven all the available trims including an overnight test drive of a Performance model. The power is great from 5 mph to about 90 mph, lots of torque that is instant. The acceleration drops off rapidly over 90 mph and it doesn't feel fast on the highway from say 70-100+.
The interior is pretty meh, the materials feel kind of cheap. The seats aren't real leather, but rather some artificial vinyl. The tech is pretty cool and I could really see autopilot being super useful in bumper to bumper traffic on the highway. In the end I just couldn't justify the 70K+ for the car, it feels like a mid 30's car and the looks are pretty dumpy looking even for the Performance edition (they all look the same). If they would have released the 32k base model I probably would have taken one optioned up to low 40's minus the 7500 federal incentive but it looks like the incentive will fade before they release the base model so I got my 1k deposit back. |

That's another problem with Tesla - they don't have 50 or 100 years of experience behind them, and there's a lot to be said for that. BMW, GM, Ford, etc. all have practical history of how the materials that they use hold up under various environmental conditions.

Electric cars will be here in 10-20 years, cars like M2/M3 won't.
Autonomous self driving cars will be here in 10-20 years, manual trans won't You can deduct from that, which one you should drive when you still have the chance |

I love torque
But electric cars are for maroons, All that technology, youre letting control of your own car slip out of your fingers bit by bit Dont mistake movement in any direction as progression |

I think that was an obscure Bugs Bunny reference.

who cares about winning the arguement, your funeral
('funeral' is used in a symbolic figure of speech sense , not literally. In a world of left brained NPCs its hard to remember most ppl dont have a sense of allegorical analysis ) |

In the 2 months that my brother has had his Model 3, the car has had to be back in the shop for a misaligned front bumper, missing weatherstripping on the glass roof, sagging weatherstripping in the driver side rear door, and faulty door locks. Its been fun

They do seem to be bad at designing a car that is easy to assemble. I haven't met any owners that regret the purchase though.

I just got one. AWD, Ext. 0-60 4.5sec. I love everything about it. No misalignments on body parts. Just a perfect car, kills my M2 for daily duties. EV is the future folks.

No way in hell I'd choose any Tesla Snooze box over an M car. Yes, they are faster in a straight line, but good luck getting wheel spin, or side slip angle, or driving enjoyment. Their motto is "No Dramma"
Well screw that. M cars are ALL about drama, and smokey burnouts, and drifting, and lap times. Try getting a burnout out of a Tesla. When I'm about to loose my license and it's all about ride sharing, and an autonomous car picking me up to go to retirement hall for a Bingo night, I'm game. Till then hell no.

Obviously the M2 is better for track use. I don't see too many people drifting or doing burnouts on the street though. |

Only people I heard bashing Tesla are the ones that have not driven one. Tesla freaking rocks and it's actually fun to drive on the weekends as well as driving daily.
Keep bashing electric cars. You guys are missing out and I'm not. Ev really is the future.

And with full confidence I repeat: I'll take the 50/50 weight distribution of an M2 along with the active M diff and the sound of a straight six over blistering fast in a straight line and no personality handling of a Tesla. My M2 has Sport, Sport+ and Full system off mode for the track. Yes, my M2 had electric steeting but I still feel the road, and I know exactly when I'm approaching the limits of traction. I then can choose to stay under those limits, or apply more throttle and manage side slip angle myself. Compare that to your Tesla. Quote:
But I actually enjoy the act of Driving. My M2 is Manual, and a good heal-and-toe downshift is very rewarding. Getiing the rear to step out under power is rewarding. Doing a drift in the wet at slight blip of throttle is rewarding. Current EVs are not. Fast in a straight line and that's it. EVs can be made into a pure enjoyment driving machine. But I have not seen one yet. Perhaps the Roadter will be different. True driving enjoyment machine should be rear wheel drive. We will see. Till then M it is, or Mustang, or Corvette, Or Camaro.
