Dedicated Track tires

Looking for some advice from M2 drivers who track their M2's. Just bought a set of 18" 9.5" et 28 wheels for the track. Looking to put some strictly track rubber on them. My car is all stock except brakes so I will be limited to 255/35 tires. It is also a square set-up.

I have 2 years of testing, mostly on this set up. I do have coilovers and camber plates, so let me start by saying a good set of camber plates ( like GC) really help get the most out of the square set up. As for track tires I have tried about 10 different options . In the end I really like the G-force R-1 in 265/35/18 square....with a 5 mm spacer up front to clear the coilovers. These tires are fast, durable and predictable. I have run Hoosier R7 in 275 square but had to run a larger spacer and had rubbing....this will probably not work well on your stock set up. For all around use the Bridgestone RE-71r , 265/18 square, is a great wet, dry, cold option that you can drive to the track and back home. Hope this helps.

Nitto NT01. Fantastic grip, long life, no heat cycling issues and cheap. It's the go-to tire for most of the instructors in the NE BMW clubs.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but can anyone confirm if you can fit four tires inside the M2? Eg one/two in the trunk, two in the backseat?

Do you know from your experience if a 265/35/18 tire will work on a stock set-up with no coil overs or camber plates?

With the right offset it should work but if you're tracking then you will need camber anyway. I run 265/35/18 RE71Rs on Apex FL-05s and camber plates. I think they did fit without camber but I had camber plates installed before taking them to the track. Without some kind of camber adjustment any track tires are not going to last, the shoulders will get destroyed very quickly.

And 265/35/18 on 9.5" rims will fit with 1 in the trunk and 3 on the backseat (may even fit 4 on the backseat). You won't get 2 in the trunk and I don't think folding the seats helps either really.

I just ordered Apex FL-5 rims with 28 offset. I don't want to put on Camber Plates as I only track 6x a year. Maybe I'll change my mind at the end of next track season. Right now I have Track Pads, and Track Wheels.

All good advise. My friend tracks his with 265/18 square RE71 with no camber plates...it works but you really should install them...or at the least add as much camber as the factory set up permits

Don't forget to check out the Turner spacers....hub centric and finished center...great fit and finish

There are a couple of posts in wheel section of people putting 3 in back seat and 1 in trunk. I think you need to bring drivers seat forward a bit.

Four 275/18 tires will fit on the back seats if you put them like a roll of life savers. Can possibly even fit wider tires.

If your looking for max sizing in a 9.5 I would go with an NT01 265/40r18 squared or 275/35r18 RS4 or RE-71 in similar sizing. That's a 26.3/26.4" diameter and equal to the 265/35r19 front tires I ran. That was as far as I could go diameter wise in the front. I like a larger sidewall and I think they will look even better in an 18. That's a very similar size to a Pirelli or Michelin Cup car slick sidewall wise.

Going with a 265/35r18 means you will loose almost an inch of sidewall.

Have you run a 265/40r18 on the track? Any noticable difference from a 35 sidewall? I would like to run 265/40r18, just want to be sure they don't rub.

I haven't run a 40 series since I was on 19's but I ran the same 26.3" diameter up front. No fender rubbing. You may lightly brush the front splash guard on full lock turning around. Nothing audible or damaged just a brush.

I had a similar sidewall height out back and I felt like it had more grip. To the point I had to lower pressure to utilize the whole tread width. I think a 265/40 square would be perfect, maybe the only draw back would be less transient response from a larger sidewall but more grip might make up for that deflection? I just like the beefy look.

I think this is a less common set up. More sidewall tends to soften the car and increase transition time and raises the CG slightly . With only coilovers and camber plates with the R-1 in 265/35/18, my car took second place in TT4 at Road Atlanta and Barber....not bad considering it weighs 600lbs more than the other ( full race) cars!

You can run 275/35/18 square easily. Heck I ran 285/30/18 Hoosiers square on 18X10 Apex wheels.

I did a lot of research recently for a track setup (ZM2 and Twt, I read a lot of your posts along with a few others). Went with a staggered 18" setup and RE-71Rs. In the wet, they're not nearly as good as the Pilot 4S I use daily and have tracked, but in the dry they're a huge step up. More grip than I expected for a trackable street tire. However, the outside shoulder of the fronts have worn really quick, so I'm installing camber plates before the next track day. If you're not going for slicks and want to drive your track tires to the track, the RE-71R is an optimal choice.

It's close to a race tire compound in a street tire tread. 71R was built for autocross to be fast on the first run even when the tires are not up to temp. Durability is not good. For WRL 8 hour enduro they only last 1 day vs 2 full + days with Hankook RS4.

Agreed on 71R longevity. You can trash a set of them fast if you’re not nice to them. Here’s some recent performance data vs a couple tires: https://m.tirerack.com/tires/tests/t...b=ResultCharts

18x9.5 +28 or even +35 with a 5mm spacer with 275/35/18 will fit up front? I have camber plates and M perf. coils. Ideally I would like to run this setup.
