Bucketlist: Stelvio Pass, Italy
Earlier this month, I decided to wrap up my vacation with a trip to Stelvio Pass in Italy. Every since I saw it on Top Gear in 2007, it’s been on my list of dream drives. Even though it was only about 350 miles, it took almost 8 hours to get there because of all the B-roads (not that I’m complaining).
It was an amazing trip, and something I’ll never forget. With a little luck, I’ll be heading back down there towards the end of September with a friend that’s coming out from california. Lots of pictures and details here: https://www.americanineurope.info/th...vio-pass-italy Teasers... Who else here has tackled the mighty Stelvio? Is it everything you wanted, or have you found something better? |

Yup I have done Stelvio many times. I took my M2 up there two years ago when there was -1 degrees and 4 meter walls of snow hahah...
One of the other drives was this (I was filming): And I did it in the MINI: Other nice locations in the Alps there are sooooo many. Most special for me was the San Baldo, since it is close to Venice, really short and it was a wonderful last pass after haven driven about 12 across the Alps last year. MR |

Great pics!
I'd love to go in the car. Did it on a cycling holiday a few years ago and although it was unfortunately raining and somewhat miserable, it was such a memorable experience. But, although it's the iconic road in the region, based on my experiences on the bike, I thought the Umbrail (now it's been paved) would be better for driving, the descent was so much fun into Switzerland, loads of cornering variation, not just the tight hairpins that feature so heavily on the Stelvio. I imagine going up there in the car would be a more rewarding drive. |
