Can't speak for the US (you lot are in a world of your own over there) but in many countries elsewhere in the real world the EV infrastructure required is years away from being ready. Petrol cars including the upcoming G87 & plenty of others will continue to be produced for quite a few years yet, though I can see hybrids being the norm.
I'm not going to get into a debate with the Tesla fanboy types & silicone valley space cadets but reality is a long way from a lot of the bullshit being bandied around.

I, too, am holding out hope for the G87. I currently own an F87 and an F80, and suspect the G87 may replace my F80 in 3 or 4 years (when LCI comp becomes available).
I think the G87 will be smaller than my current F80, and will have better steering, suspension tuning, engine, and tech - and a manual transmission! |

We are just 10% of their buyers now, most of the money wants cushy pretenders. I don't think they care about us enough to keep making aggressive products for such a small pool of people. 7 new bimmers since 2002, mixed leased and financed, I'm still going to be their bitch, I'm a customer for life one way or another. Wtf, I was inches away from a 1M at sticker or another x5 lease? i blame my wife for that until the day I die, she called it a little fake M car so why not just get this diesel sport x5 with cinnamon interior. Take the smallest car in the fleet, fit it with a high reving straight-six coupled to a 6MT gearbox and everyone will be happy except Theresa |

More proof of BMWs focus on tech instead of driving dynamics. This is also the worst BMW ad I've ever seen.

Turn up the base broham and enjoy the sick beatz. For the record, I couldn't agree more. BMW has lost their way for me, but has found a new demographic that seems to be supportive in a big way. Kudos to them (I guess)! |

Isn't BMW's heritage is all about the driving experience?
In-car tech gimmicks do not forge brand loyalty. Crash safety and driving dynamics do. What on earth are those guys thinking? Eliminating the the driver element and letting techs taking over in a BMW ad is both hilarious and ridiculous. I get that some are looking out for an autonomous future but a lot of people aren't. One common way for people to express their freedom is to drive a car. People treasure that experience and an autonomous car simply do not and cannot bring forth. Would one want a plastic case Rolex with an easy-to-read digital display? Damn no! Rolex will tell these people to go get a Casio. As that will kill the heritage and without a heritage the brand is just a commodity with zero desirability. |

I'm not sure it matters at all. There is not a real reason to buy newer and newer models of cars that some folks (buyers, represented on this forum) feel are quite good.
If you bought into the F87 thinking you're getting a great performing and relatively reliable street car then keeping it seems like a logical step to take. The new models coming out doesn't somehow make your F87 work more poorly. |

This is like the meme where the guy looks longingly at a passing girl (classic BMW) whereas the girlfriend (new BMWs) is upset.
BMW marketing has been successful whereas they've maintained and lead luxury car sales in the US. Mostly due to the success of the X3 & X5 with X models 60% of their 2020 sales! I do feel the huge grills are a big mistake (part of the X3/X5 success is their classic BMW styling) and will see how sales are impacted. Dollars to donuts, they do a quick LCI refresh and tone them down. Bottom line, us enthusiasts are an ever shrinking % of BMW buyers. Be glad that BMW is successful in other areas, allowing them profits to still provide cars like the M2C, and hope that continues.

Don't forget that "sales" to BMW mainly means leasing. They are right at the top of all automakers in terms of "sales" being leases. As MSRP goes up, their lease rate soars (i.e. not even sure *anyone* actually purchases a 7-series these days) along with certain geographic markets where cars like M3 and M4 are mainly lease-mobiles. The market for rental (lease) cars likely has a much different profile. If Ford was leasing 70% of their cars back in the late 1950s, the Edsel might have been a hit! Of all the cars from the past that attempted a dramatically different grill design, the G8x reminds me most of the Edsel. I'm betting BMW doesn't flinch an inch with these new "grills" and the lease market demographic jumps on them like crazy. That said, having seen the G8x in person (well it was in Sao Paulo yellow which was so bright and awesome in the sun it was hard to notice anything else), I will say I wasn't as disgusted with it as in the pictures. If I was a lessee, I'm not sure it would be a defining element preventing me from renting another car for a couple of years...you can always dump it back to BMW with your financial exposure known.

I'm about to order an M2C. I buy cars and keep them a long time, so not interested in leasing. The M3 would have been a no-brainer but it's hard to buy a car that is a laughingstock for so many. Now I'm even questioning the M2C. I love it, but do I want to continue buying cars from BMW...

This marketing is absolutely excrement. The advertising sign off on this spot should be fired. Forget the content as it’s story line was at best, high school level. I seriously hope BMW learned from this worthless endeavor and goes back to the funny/sexy adds that have more mainstream appeal.

My M2C is actually the first and last new M car I'll ever buy.
I'm eyeing Porsche next, and I hope by the time I move on over there, there are no shenanigans going on over there. Quote:
So to alleviate your fears, I wouldn't question the M2C at all. It's a truly great product. |

Is BMW becoming the “Ultimate Driving Substitute”?

I have enjoyed most all BMWs that I've leased. Leasing is primarily to save $s toward the latest and greatest. Each one has fit its purpose very well, yet is still a fun satisfying car to drive and allows me to change things up as desired.
M2 Comp: Definitely the most playful, fun to drive current BMW. My weekend, mountain, and occasional track toy. X3M: Plenty quick being the base model. 2020 still with iDrive 6 and analog look gauges. A firm ride but still provides daily utility and long trip usability. An ///M worthy SUV in my opinion. Former M550i: Perfect executive sports sedan. Impressive performance and good handling without sacrificing the executive luxury side (especially after ditching the RFT tires). Fits the M Performance line well. Just not a track weapon. Get the M5 if you want a true M and can afford it. Looking at the future: I don't know if I can stomach the large grills. How well the iX3 or what other EVs drive is tbd. I just may keep my current cars past the lease.
