2017 BMW M2  [0.00]
Hey everybody,

This is the build thread for my 2017 LBB M2!
IG: @hans.device

Quick intro / backstory: I have wanted an M car since as long as I can remember. When I was in high school, the E9x M3s were super in, and I remember thinking to myself that I would eventually own an M car of my own when I had the means to do so. Fast forward a few years, and the M2 debuts in 2016 and reviews start pouring out, labeling the car as a "return to form" for BMW and stating that it was the first "real" M car in years. I knew that at some point I would absolutely love to own this car.

In 2020, I was fortunate enough to get a new job amidst COVID and all of the economic downturns. I had been saving up for the M2 for a few years, so I wanted it to be to my exact spec - otherwise, I felt like I would have regrets.
Luckily, there aren't too many different options on the M2s, so eventually I came across the one I wanted:
- 2017 MY (wanted the analog pre-LCI gauges, but still wanted iDrive 5.0 with CarPlay)
- Exec Pack
- 6MT
- Long Beach Blue (non negotiable )
- under 25k miles

So without further ado, this is my M2!

Delivery day:
Flew to Minneapolis, MN to pickup the car, and roadtripped 1,200 mi down to San Antonio, TX to see my folks (since work is indefinitely WFH). I know some people say it's crazy to tape up the front end of the car, but I thought it was a worthwhile use of $20 and an hour of my time if it meant that I could save my paint from even just one or two rock chips

Wow our cars are remarkably similar! And our pickup dates are literally within days of one another!

I read your build on Bimmerpost and it sounds like we are in very similar positions in life. Can't wait to see what directions our cars go in! I'm certain they're both going to turn out great.

>Followed back, love to see how people / cars progress on IG

Yeah, remarkably similar!
What do you have in mind for your car?

You'll have to throw in some tips on how to capture LBB properly. Your latest ig pic is so true to life!

Yeah I definitely will! I shoot with a Sony A6000 / Sigma 35mm prime lens (so nothing too pricey) but I think it's actually the preset on Lightroom that makes the color pop! I tried the ones I used to use on my Mustang (that car was grabber blue) and it turned out great for the M2 as well

I think my build will start off very OEM+.. I tell myself I won't track it or do anything crazy, but I can see myself eventually itching to get back out on track again LOL

With each car I've owned, I find myself buying more quality parts right out of the gate and cutting less corners. Since this car is the most special to me out of everyone I've owned, I think it's going to get the highest quality stuff, even when not totally necessary at times!

HAHA yeah, I had to do it! People were looking at me like I was mad, but I felt like it was necessary and for the price I figured I might as well. You did your mirrors too! If I had a comp, I would! Eventually thinking about grabbing a set of comp mirrors for my OG - I think it makes a world of difference aesthetically

Nice and simple first mods!

After owning the car a few days, I feel the car is already incredible out of the box, but it needs just a few easy "starter" mods to make it truly feel complete in this stock form.

1) I felt like the pre-LCI taillights were always a great design, but so dumb that they didn't include full LEDs. I understand BMW has to save some stuff for their LCI models, but it was still incredibly annoying to me that these were halogen bulbs! So I pulled them out and replaced all the lights in the rear of the car with Sirius LEDs (8x red for taillights/turn, 2x white for reverse). While I was in there, decided to toss some LEDs in the turn signals as well for the "complete" LED look. IMO this makes the pre-LCI lights look 1000x better, and just as nice looking as LCI units in terms of the design!
(Thanks to ChrisK - followed his thread here and worked beautifully: https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...ghlight=sirius)

2) IND paint-matched front reflectors - very popular first mod, and while I don't think it's the most elegant solution (since up close you can still somewhat see where the outline of the reflector is), it looks miles better than USDM orange imo!

3) Bimmercode coding - Using the Veepeak OBD BLE adapter + Bimmercode on my phone, I coded some simple things to my liking:
- ASD disabled (actually makes a pretty big difference)
- US Sidemarkers off in headlights
- Auto-folding mirrors (arguably the most important )
- Disabled seat belt reminder chime
- Coded all bulbs to LED and warm checks off to make sure they wouldn't throw any error codes

I think with just a few simple mods the car looks and feels like the way it should have come from factory!

Well, the time has come for a bit more performance oriented upgrades. I know I'll be tracking the car next year (already feels like I've been off track for so long), and I knew that the OEM charge pipe was a point of failure, so decided to go with the FTP charge pipe. Figured I'd toss in an Active Autowerke Front Mount Intercooler at the same time, since the oem one would have to come out for installation anyways.

My thoughts:
1) The process itself on paper shouldn't be very hard. No weird tools are necessary (literally just a flathead, 8mm/15mm sockets, and some torx bits), and taking everything out wasnt a difficult task.

2) Doing this job on jack stands was an absolute pain in the ***. The main hard part is getting the new AA FMIC back in and screwed in. Not only is it hard to perfectly align the two tabs side to side to slide it up, but the AA intercooler weight a good 15 lbs or so more than the OEM unit (feels like 50lbs LOL). it's very hard to push up and get everything aligned properly on both charge pipes, while also pushing back on the plastic pieces around the intercooler. Overall, would have been much easier even with just a second pair of helping hands.

3) Driving impressions: exactly the same. LOL, this was to be expected tho, as I am on stock tune and the weather these days (at the time of writing in mid-November) isn't exactly hot outside. Hoping this will reduce the heat soak in summer months, especially on track, and no charge pipes breaking!

>It definitely does look sick tho

More performance / cosmetic parts

More updates to the car! I should probably update this build thread more often, but I keep a running list of dates and everything that I install on the car on my iCloud notes, so I tend to put the Bimmerpost posts till later

Having said that, the M2 has gotten a few more goodies in the past few weeks.
This past weekend (12/05/2020), I took a road trip down to SoCal and visited the guys over at RG Sport USA to get some MSS Height Adjustable Springs installed. Originally, I wanted to jump right into a true coilover setup like Ohlins R&T, but decided to try out the MSS Height Adjustable Spring kit first since I got a really good deal on it. Boy I'm really glad that I went this route first.
- Ride is super compliant, with the suspension really only being 5-10% stiffer than stock.
- Body roll is noticeably improved, noticed that it handled a bit "tighter" as I went up Azusa canyon.
- I had the shop lower about 20mm all around, so there definitely is room to go quite a bit lower. I didn't want to slam the car on the ground, as H.A.S. kits (whether MSS or KW) are known to run into issues with bump stops and harsh rides at their lowest setting. Definitely happy with this ride height and comfort!

While I was there, I had RG Sport toss on some 10mm Turner hub-extender spacers in the front and 7.5mm rear for some more flush fitment. Already looks really flush, but with the one size larger PS4S coming later this month, I think it'll be absolutely perfect.

Cosmetically, there have been some minor changes:
- My Future Classic print finally came in! Competition style I thought the price was a bit steep when originally purchasing, but the attention to detail on these prints is unreal. I definitely think this was a worthwhile purchase, added that extra personal touch to my car that I really enjoy!
- Goldenwrench Blackline taillight overlays + rear honeycomb reflector overlays are definitely a worthwhile purchase. Waited until Black Friday to snag a good deal on them, but I'd definitely pay full price for them tbh. They're excellent quality vinyl, and the little touches really go a long way in my opinion!

Nice lil update! I think your car is lower than mine somehow. Maybe it's time for me to go a little lower

...and it might also be time for that future classic sticker

Eventuri V2 Intake / AutoID mirrors

Hi everybody, happy holidays! Installed the Eventuri V2 closed intake system in my car a few weeks ago- here are my impressions!
- A lot of people say that the "glass blowing" noise gets annoying when the revs drop, but to be honest, I haven't really been able to hear it in car. I think the V2 intake shield does a lot to isolate these small noises.
- The spool noises are insane - when you go partial throttle up to about 3.5k or so and then let off, the car makes all sorts of cool turbo noises. Definitely one of the things I missed in the N/A world! Also, afaik, this intake is the only one that consistently makes the turbo flutter noise, which I honestly really like.
- Aside from that, I can't lie and say I felt a night and day performance gain. It might have picked up 5hp or so, but I mainly got this piece because of the sound. What I will say though is that the whole intake feels like quality. $1500 for an intake is not a cheap price, but the quality shows in every single piece of the intake. Thanks to @supersam for hooking me up so I don't have to spend $1,500

Also installed the AutoID paint matched mirror caps today!Overall, I'd rate the whole product 9/10.
- Fitment is 8.5/10 - the passenger side required a bit of massaging for everything to fit properly, and where the mirror meets the turn signals doesn't 100% line up properly, but it's very close.
- Paint match is super close, at least on LBB. It's almost a dead on match versus my OEM mirror caps, and my eye can't distinguish the difference.
- For the money, I have 0 complaints - looks fantastic and very OEM! I don't think I'd be able to tell it wasn't OEM if I didn't know that OG M2s didn't come with them standard.

New wheels / tires / LCI tails

Figured it was time to update the thread here with wheels / tires!
- Rays Gramlights 57DR Gun Blue II
- 19x9.5 / 19x10.5 stagger
- Michelin PS4S 255/35 F / 275/35 R

I've had ample time over the past month or so to drive around on this set and just wanted to share some impressions.
1) I get bored of wheel setups so easily, and this is no exception. I think the gun blue on LBB looks really nice, but I could also definitely see myself getting a different set now that the floodgates are open and I've bought my first set of aftermarket wheels.
2) For cast wheels, Gramlights are very light and well constructed! I got them ceramic coated before throwing them on the car, and they stay relatively clean and hide brake dust from the OE pads quite well too.
3) The Michelins are really nice. This is my first set of PS4S (previously I had run PSS, Continental ECS, Bridgestone S007As, Hankook V12s, Federals) and I can tell you the premium price tag shows. It was a tad more expensive than basically every other tire aside from Yokohama, and it really translates to daily driving. Interior tire noise is definitely reduced, bad the grip levels for street driving are noticeably better than any other street tire I've used in my opinion. I won't be taking these to the track, but I think for a street tire, they're definitely the one to beat.

Additionally, I added some LCI tails as well. Initially, I was not really looking to change out the Pre-LCI tails, as I liked the running light design just fine. However, after seeing LCI brake lights in front of me on the highway (along with the much larger, single led turn signal), I was convinced I needed a set. 30 mins of repinning and coding later, they are on the car. Definitely worthwhile in making the car look more "modern" in my opinion!

Gramlights are officially sold. I always felt like this car needed 18s, and I'm definitely liking the look more.
New setup is here!
TE37 SL / Formula Silver
18x9.5 / 265/35/18 square RT615K+

Few thoughts:
- This is my first time using 200tw tires on the street as my only set. I was going to go with PS4S again after being really impressed with my last set, but they are currently still on backorder on TireRack as I write this, so decided to give the Falkens a shot after hearing lots of good things on them. Will review once I've driven much more on the tire (plan on moving them over to a set of Apex wheels for my track set).
- I've wanted TEs for a really long time. Like a reeeeally long time. To give some context, I wanted TEs on my GTI when I was in college, but couldn't afford it at the time. On my last car, an S550 Mustang GT, I placed an order for TE37 Ultras, but canceled as the wait time was looking like 5+ months. I knew I had to get this wheel at some point, and with the SL variant getting discontinued this year, I couldn't wait any longer (the SL variant has the exact same face design as the "OG" TE37, which I really prefer over the newer Sagas). I could have gotten a set of Ultras in 19, but decided I definitely like the 18 with meaty tire look better. I absolutely love the wheels, and the Formula Silver finish is the icing on the cake for me!
- I need coils soon. The MSS kit was fine with the 19s, but it's very clear it doesn't go low enough to fill in the wheelgap in the front with 18s. Hopefully I can snag some new suspension and a camber plate for the front which will benefit both ride height as well as on track performance!

yeah I'm planning to do 275 next haha. But I want lower coils anyway with better suited springs for track use so why not both
