I just got off the phone with a very nice Michelin rep and the MP4S 285/30/19 will be released in the US market on 1 April 2020, with purchase availability in late April/early May. Believe it or not, it's NOT an April Fool's thing.

Timing is almost perfect as my Apex EC-7's (1/2" wider than OEM) are having supply chain issues and I won't see them until May.

Now, the question becomes "Which rear size to get"?

Here are the particulars:

Front: 19x9.5 ET28, MP4S 265/30/19

Rear: 19x10.5 ET 45. MP4S in either 285/30/19 or 295/30/19

Suspension: Slightly lowered on TCK coilovers.

So-- 285 or 295? I'm having issues with the DSC going bonkers when I hammer it due to a Carbahn flash and some other goodies. 295 has been the "approved" answer since there was no really good 285 choice. But now that Michelin's released it, that would keep the front/rear stagger the same as stock (i.e. 20 difference).

Thoughts?

285/30 is the right size for 10.5, and matched perfectly with the 265/30, end of story.

Not 100% sure there? At least looking at the calculator, it almost looks like the 295 is a better fit?

I've looked at so many tire calculators that I'm starting to get myself confused.

I attached a 285 and 295 v. the stock 265 below.....

Don't use tire calculators, use the tire specs.

Beyond that, the match to the 295 is the 275, and it's probably not going to end well if you do that.

I'm having trouble finding specs for the 285.

I realize that I can't do 275 up front, but I did ask the question of Apex-- they still recommend 295 as a better fitment over the 285.

I realize that the 295 affects the stagger a bit, but from all accounts that's sort of a non-issue and can easily be corrected by suspension tuning.

Sidewall aspect seems closer to stock as well-- at least generically without looking at the exact specs.

I'll keep hunting for information from Michelin.

Here are all the specs I was able to get directly from Michelin.

Tire Rack doesn't have any specs on the 285 yet-- they said they'll post them up after they do their own measurements once they get the first batch in.

I should have qualified what I said.

If you're going with the SAME OVERALL TYPE of tire fitment as BMW spec'd the car with (245/35 & 265/35 on 9 & 10), then you would want the 265/30 & 285/30 on 9.5 & 10.5. It's true that they are SHORTER tires, but they are a matched pair for TW and height, and but barely flatten the sidewall (just 7.62mm on the front and 12.7mm on the back).

The 295/30's TW is 40.64, so you're flattening the sidewall 27.94mm, and the only tire it's matched with for TW and height doesn't fit well.

Run your 245/35 or 255/35 on the front with the 295/30 on the back, it's your car, but for me, it'll only be a matched pair.

265/30/19 front. That's a done deal, decision-wise.

Leaning towards 285/30/19 rear, but a lot of people/companies sure seem to think that 295/30/19 is the way to go.

Maybe it's because the 285/30 wasn't really available? Maybe not.

Hence the confusion.

Ugh I wish these came out a year ago. I got 295s but definitely would have gotten 285s if it was available. Mine currently on MPS rubs under full compression although the 285 cup2zps I had prior to that cleared perfectly

Yup. I talked directly to Michelin today and confirmed the release date of 1 Apr 2021.

The rep said it would take about a month for them to be available through the supply chain.

It's mostly because the 285/30 wasn't available in their snooty-ass PS4S, and also because because of their grip misconceptions.

A lot of people think that by choosing a 295 over a 285 they will get more forward grip/better acceleration (which they want because the M2 is a grip-limited vehicle even in stock form). But the 295 won't provide ANY better forward grip because the contact patch is the exact same size, it's only a different shape, a WIDER shape, which is what you need for cornering.

Choose the 295 if you want increased grip at the rear (as related to the front) during cornering.

It's the 285/30 Brian, it always has been.

No real report. Picked it up, drove home in rush hour traffic, put it in the garage, then work work work.

I'm flying pretty much constantly until mid-next week, and it's going to be rain and snow anyway.

But, initial impression?

NICE.

VEEEERY VERY NICE.

MUCH more compliant over rough road, but still has that "point and go" feeling-- color me impressed.

I can't wait to get the MP4S's (265/285) and Apex EC-7's on to see how it all comes together, but that won't be until May, most likely.

(I'll get the Dinan exhaust put on at the same time if it ever shows up).

I'm waiting for the warmer weather to put on 265/30 fronts and 295/30 rears, I'll report what I find fitment wise.

TireRack recommends a 9.5-10.5" wheel width range for the 285, but I've seen many 285's on 11" wheels and they work great there as well. I'd recommend 10.5" for the 285.
