new tire review
Hello,
After the winter I will change my MICHELIN PSS tyres. Overall, I am satisfied with these tyres, even if they take a long time to warm up. I like to ride hard and do small slides so as these tires are very expensive I would like to try something else. My choice is the new FALKEN AZENIS FK520, I would like to test with these dimensions - 255-35-zr19 -275-35-zr19 What do you think of this choice and will the small additional tread width give more traction? |

I'm not understanding your post at all.
You like the PSS, but want a less expensive tire that warms up faster, has more traction, and you're looking at an unproven tire from Falken? I think you need to clearly state your priorities. Everything is a trade-off. Inexpensive Long lasting High grip Quiet Light weight Pick 2. |

it may seem contradictory (laughs). The MICHELIN is a good tire but I only did 8000km with the rear tires. I'm not looking for a cheaper tire that will be better but just an alternative with good performance. When I talk about better traction, it's with the size offered, currently my tires are 245/265.

The stock 245 runs VERY wide, so no normal 255 is going to be significantly wider. The stock 265 runs normal, so any 275 should be slightly wider, but will NOT give you better traction. Remember, rear traction isn't so much the number on the tire, it's the compound and pressure (the weight too, but in this instance that won't change). As a general rule you can look at the treadwear rating to see the general grip of the tire, and how long it'll probably last. The Michelin PSS and PS4S are 300 tw tires, which is the norm for this type of tire. Going to a 280 tw tire like I did with my Advan Apex V601 will give me more grip but won't last as long. Moving to an Indy Firehawk with a 340 tw will last much longer, but won't provide the grip. You can't have it all sir. 285/30 is an option for sure, but to maintain the balance of the car you'll need to run the 265/30 in the front, and will probably poke at stock height. Beyond that they are shorter tires, so you'll increase the gap between the fender lip and the tire making the car appear as if it is raised, not lowered. This is the reason a lot of guys choose 255/35 and 275/35, as the tires are a bit TALLER, not so much wider, so it takes up some of the gap making the car appear lower. |

ADVAN APEX V601 Is going to be your only option for a better tire in the price range your looking for. roughly $20 more ish per tire then the Falken 520. I havent tested the Falken 520 but, If your going Falken, Id only go with the 615k+ or the rt660. But thats out your budget. If you want you can also go 255/35 and 285/35, I now run 265/30 and 295/30.
But unfortunely if traction is what your looking for, you will find little of it in your price range sorry. You most likely wont get it and if you do itll be for 2-3k miles because the tire is new on your price range. And this has been discussed many times over, sidewall height with lower air pressure will give you the most forward traction, while lateral traction is increased tread width. If you want the most forward traction, 285/35 rears 26-27psi in the tires. ( This will lay the entire treadwith on the surface, and allow for a less hard sidewall which helps forward traction) Since your jumping to a 275/35 tire youll find benefit in lateral and forward because its increasing all over (sidewall and treadwith). I advise you to go to the V601 vs the Falken 520 EDIT: With going a little out of your budget I'd do your best to jump to the Ventus RS-4 or the Advan A052. Its about $80 more per tire, good grip forward and lateral But not too ridiculous in price

With my old 335i f30, I rode with PS4s.
the last time I had to replace my tires, the PS4 was no longer available and I had to choose another brand. I then took Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 and I must say that not only was this brand of tire less expensive than the MICHELIN, but it went really well on dry or wet roads. |
