OP - very nice ED. Glad your pops is doing fine. Btw... you don't need a Swiss Vignette to enter Switzerland when driving thru that tunnel(Julia Pass ?)... You only need a Swiss vignette when you drive on a Swiss(CH) Autobahn. Same goes for Austria. IF you stick to the back roads... you don't need a vignette. But it is safer to buy one... bc the fine is ridiculous IF the Polizei catch you without a vignette on an Autobahn. I know in Austria it is a 130 euro fine, for not having the 8 euro vignette. Also... IF you don't fully affix it to the inside of the windshield(so that you can peel it off, that's a no NO)... that will cost you 500 euros on the spot!

So we actually went back through the tunnel and the nice lady in the toll booth (on the dam, where you pay the 15 Euro toll for the one-way tunnel) told us the road on the other side (route 28), despite the sign, was not a toll road & that we could turn onto it and drive down there and look for a gas station (one with attendants ). She didn't charge us for going through the tunnel again either.

Thanks - it's too bad the loan didn't mature while you were reading it! I actually had to make the first payment while writing it though!

Haha, 'cause it's more fun to me, that's all - not gonna start a stick vs DCT debate in here - there's a thread for that!

You did the right thing... I didn't know about that sign... but on that road(#28, you do not need a vignette). Anytime your traveling into Austria or Switzerland... just buy a vignette... bc the Polizei are very aggressive in enforcing "their" laws. The fine is insane IF caught without a vignette. ~130 euros... and IF you don't full affix the decal it can be upwards of 500 euro fine, cash on the spot! Love all your photos and writeup. On your next ED you have to stay much longer... a few days just will not do!! Dackel
