Of course, in the nanny-all-the-things M2, they're much better, but they still lose their ultimate grip quicker, and get loud sooner than a true street tire does. The PSC2 is just not a good street tire, and to say it is, is to mislead someone.
What car? What spec?

I've driven several cars with the Cup2, but spent quite a bit of time on them in my friend's Lotus Esprit. It's a fish out of water IMO. It's not a great track-day tire, nor a great street tire, not a great street/track tire. The 71R is the tire to have in that regard. And if you're just driving on the track, the Trofeo is the pussycat to have.

Not to threadjack, but I'm running into a similar situation.

I don't want Cup 2s, but I'm having a hard time finding the stock sized rear PS4S.

The OEM Pilot Super Sports are available...is there really that much wet weather handling improvement going with PS4S over super Sports?

Haha, for sure. And as the tires age the gap gets even larger. That's the thing about all these tires, you have to be so careful because how the tire behaves when it's new can be vastly different to how it behaves with over 5,000 miles on it. I'm a PSS fan, but as the tire ages it definitely leaves a lot to be desired, and the PS4S picks up that slack nicely.

Cup2s on a Lotus are likely not the Connect 240 which have been reviewed to have much better behavior in the wet than the previous 180 version. There are many Cup2 versions.

One point that has not been made yet (if I missed it, I apologize in advance).

The Sport Cup 2s have a few different versions. I have the star spec Cup2 that was designed for the OG M2. There are other versions (non-star spec) and the most recent versions (e.g., connect).

The version I have is really for track use. You can drive on the street but the tires are very stiff and have limited grip when cold (not driving hard). In the rain, forget about it.

The MPSS or MP4S is what you want for the street. My $.02

Yes, agreed, but the type of tire is the same. You know as well as I do that any Cup2 won't last, it'll get hard and loud quick with any sort of road use compared to a true road tire (they heat cycle out quickly). But again, if you have the money to burn and don't drive much in rain, more power to you .

I'm not burning money, it's against my religion 😉. I bought a set of Connect 240s from off of a M2CS for $800. I live in a warm dry climate so I'm hoping that the 240s won't get so greasy on those 100 degree days. The MPSSs turn to gum on hot days in the twisties. I figure at $800 it's worth a try. I'll report back in summer.

I think you're in luck, the Cup series likes heat!

I run the 180 thread wear Cup2s and love them. I run them through the warm months and do about 4 track days per year. Great grip when warm, and soft enough to run daily. They are super reliable and always seem to have more grip then I need it on the track.

I was able to drop my best lap time on Nordshleife from 8:18 (MPSS tires) to 8:02 (adjusted for traffic), and I know they have more in them. Sweet frikkin tire.

They are soft enough for daily use, and the only time I notice I'm on Cup2s is when its under 40F and wet. They they are a joke. Hope it helps.

Ring master!

How many miles do you have on them? And how do you feel about their rain performance when driving aggressively?

I wish I could say that! Plenty of other people way faster than me!

I have about 5000 miles on them, and 3 track days. I should be able to get another 2-3 days and 3000 miles when rotated left to right. But the Ring is actually easier on tires than a lot of tracks.

Wet performance is sketchy at best. I have another video of a S-L-O-W ring lap with about a dozen skids in various places. If you are deliberate with you inputs, and slow down, they are controllable, but with any kind of haste ... lets just say your counter steering reflexes and skills need to be sharp.

Awesome, glad to help! ///MPhatic does have a point about the wet performance. These are WAAAY more break-away prone than MPSS. I expected this, so when it's wet I slow WAAAY down, but worth pointing out. They do break away with way less warning in the wet, even when it's warm out.

I figured that much but I stay out of wet unless its unexpected

I have the tire store checking on Cup 2 Connects...

Otherwise I wont see the 4S tires until June

Unless I go w 255 fronts & 275 rears

I really want to stick w 245/265

The F87 chassis really does well in that size. That's the size mine are in, and the balance is perfect. I don't get too much over or understeer, and at times all 4 wakeels break traction simultaneously on maintenance throttle.

In what size?

Stock or the 255/275?

Why do they lose traction?

245/265

Because I push them pas the limits of the car, but the thing is at maintenance (low) throttle, you if all 4 loose it at the same time, that means you have a well balanced chassis. So totally a good thing. This happens in high lateral G situations in the dry, or in fast corners when it's wet, and the limits are much lower.

Not sure what your hesitation is with the 255/35/19 and 275/35/19 tire size. They work great on the M2 and are the same size that is standard on the M3/4 with the same stock wheels. It is only 1% larger than stock and does not interfere with any of the cars nannies. Discount Tires even lists it as a standard upgrade on the M2.
