Somewhat irrelevant but it's an interesting video IMO, that illustrates Aston Martin's commitment to the third pedal; as they offer a manual transmission retrofit, after the fact, for $50,000:

DCT - technology, comfort city drive, highway lower fuel consumption, more secure feeling on fast tracks
Manual - Fun, direct power feeling, 3rd pedal effort, pure driving, no automatic sounding while shifting gears Thats for my experience 😀 |

I have 3 other manual cars. I went for DCT since this will mostly be a sporty daily driver for me that fits 2 sets of golf clubs in back! Drove both DCT and manual and enjoyed both. Can't go wrong with either.

There are even times where either one would be more suitable than the other, for different given situations. Me, personally, could only have one car at a time, so I swing for the manual but honestly wouldn't lose any sleep if I ended up with the DCT, it would just be a different user experience but not the end of the world.. |

Hi guys,
I wanted some opinion on this topic, or if someone has a similar experience. I've been driving manual as my daily driver for the last 16 years (g35 coupe before and now M235i). I don't have a second car or a daily driver, so manual has been the only thing I've used this whole time. I do get excitement driving stick from time to time, but other times I am just tired of it and want to try DCT. Please note that I have test driven a DCT and I do like it, but this is more of a long-term concern (possibly getting bored?). With that being said, I have never owned an M car before and I am looking into a M2C. I was considering going DCT based on what I explained above, but I am worried that I will regret it as I've never driven stick on an M car. I do plan to own the car for a long time, so the thought of driving stick for another 6-8 years does sound somewhat exhausting. But.... it also seems like a waste to not have stick for my first M. Thoughts?

I’m sure the transmission feels exactly the same as the one in your 235i. The transmission it’s self is not the most exciting part of the car, I don’t think DCT owners are missing anything other than the actual feel of shifting on their own. I’m happy the car has a manual, because I love driving M/T cars in general, but the unit it’s self is nothing special. |

I hear you about not wanting to mash the clutch for the next 6-8 years. If so, go with the DCT, you'll love it! |

I love the manual but you honestly cant go wrong with either on this car. They are both equally fun and engaging IMO. I went with the manual but it was a hard decision that took me months to decide. I had the DCT for a week and it was truly amazing. However with the DCT all i wanted to do is WOT ALL.THE.TIME lol.

As a MT driver myself, my observation is that youve already answered your question.
To enjoy the MT to the fullest, you have to WANT to drive stick. If you are questioning your desire to drive stick, you aren't likely to enjoy the car...and may even be annoyed or frustrated at times. That's no way to feel when spending 60k on a car. Go for DCT and enjoy the variety it offers, including being able to change gears when you want. Good luck and enjoy!

I own 2 cars. Both are 6MT. Over the years I've had autos, manuals, and a 335is with DCT. For me there was no contest, the choice was clear without hesitation 6MT-HS.

I think the most telling observation on this never ending debate is this:
you never hear of someone going DCT to manual, then back to DCT because they miss it you OFTEN hear of people going manual to DCT and then back to manual because they miss it case closed, I have finally resolved this seemingly never ending enthusiast debate after 20 years of manuals I went zf8 for a bit (which while not a DCT is responsive paddle wise) and about 6 months in I missed manual big time....and now having got one again I will never do DCT again without at least having one manual car |

I don't know, I view DCT vs. Manual debate as a personal preference, akin to
Whiskey - Ireland If you prefer a slightly smoother experience, choose the Irish variant as it is thrice distilled. DCT will be your weapon of choice. vs. Whisky - Scottish The Scots typically distill their whiskies twice, which produces a more pronounced flavour that has a 'bite'. In that case, manual transmission should be chosen. Personally, I had DCT in my 335is, and despite smoother and lighting fast shifts, I wouldn't go back...6-sp or bust! However, there is no right or wrong choice as each offers its unique level of (driving OR drinking, and NEVER concurrently) experience. With that said...I don't drink whisk(e)y as I'm an Armagnac guy any-who. Whichever you choose, enjoy in Good Health! |

Within 1.5 months of getting my 335is w/ DCT (once the newness wore off), I started regretting my transmission choice. Sure, it was super duper fast, but it lacked the engagement factor big time! That's why my Hockenheim M2C sports the 6 "row-your-own-gears" transmission. |
