How do we know this is the M2?

• We've recently confirmed that the M2 is coming at the end of 2015 - early 2016 so the timing of this prototype makes sense.
• Flared fenders and wider track.
• M3/M4 (19" Style 437M) wheels fitted for testing purposes. Even with these wider wheels, they are still tucked under the widened fenders.
• Same blue steel brakes as M3/M4, with positioning the same as the M3/M4 (different than the M235i and M235i Racing).
• Drilled rotors like M3/M4 (M235i is not drilled/slotted and M235i Racing (M Performance Brakes) are drilled and slotted).
• M limited slip differential (LSD) seen on prototype.

Obviously, we do not yet see the M2 bodywork (except for flared fenders) nor quad tail pipes as this is still a very early stage test mule, but if you recall, the early 1M prototypes (spy pics) also did not have these elements early on. This prototype is only testing drivetrain and mechanicals

As development progresses, we should start to see the other M2 cosmetic elements added - special front and rear bumpers, side skirts, quad tail pipes and potentially a different hood, mirrors and/or trunk spoiler.

The M2 will begin production in late Fall 2015, for deliveries in late 2015 - early 2016. It will feature the N55 turbo inline 6 engine (N55B30T0), producing around 370-380 PS (365-375 HP).

But never mind - the point is that, by that time, BMW will be moving away from the N55 in nearly every other application. I have no inside information, but it seems odd to me that they would use it for an M car at that point in its lifecycle.

Having said that, I have an N55 in my F10 and I think it is wonderful.
The HP/TQ for the M2 N55 are significantly higher than for the current N55 so it is an improved engine. The S55 is based off the N55 but has enough new parts that they gave it a new engine designation. Really speaking, the M2 engine could have been given its own engine designation as well, given the HP/TQ difference. So perhaps think of it as an N56 engine.

More importantly, some of the S55 parts are interchangeable with the N55 ("The M GmbH's direct-injected S55 engine is derived from BMW AG's N55 engine, and some parts are interchangeable") so between the S55 and the M2's N55, there should be some nice OEM performance parts available for performance mods to existing N55 engines.

This car has some amazing potential! I for one am very excited, and this now changes my plans entirely!!

As already mentioned, its a mule. So we can't judge the looks. It uses an N55 in the same way that the 1M used an N54. Who cares? They don't want it steeping on the toes of its bigger brothers. And for this reason as well don't expect it to be extremely light weight. They'll be a weight reduction of course, but not as much as I'm sure we would all like to see.

This car though will hopefully be what us purists have been waiting for! Don't get me wrong the M235i is a great car and in many cases it fits the bill well. And from what I've read the M3/M4 will be sensational. But this car could give us all of the M car thrills in a smaller package, just like the 1M which was a brilliant car! We shouldn't be judging it, we should be welcoming it!

My only worry would be if they did something silly like making it DCT or Auto only. Offer both, fine. As long as there is a manual. But given that all M coupés previous only came Manual, I feel confident in saying there will be a Manual option.

Let the countdown begin!!!

That all sounds right. I'm guessing that the B58 is based on no small part of the N55 as well.

Exactly. The 3rd party tuners have already shown that a simple remap can extract significant gains. Upgrade some components, e.g., intercooler, etc. and add a tune and 400hp is easily achieved.

Oh my, the anticipation builds... since I currently own an E46, and have an F32 on order, I'm really looking forward to my 2017 birthday present: an EBII vert M2. though maybe I'll splurge for an individual frozen Liquid Blue with the saddle brown leather interior.

I hate to ruin your birthday plans that you are having for yourself but I don't think a M2 vert has been announced or rumored.

It's going to end up being a S55 of sorts, without the trick cooling set up of the M3/4

I think there are plenty of hp gains to be had from the N55. Look at the type of power being produced by today's turbo engines. The 2.0L turbo engine in the CLA45 AMG produces 355 hp, the new S3's 2.0L turbo produces 296 hp, etc. The WRX, Evo, ATS, etc. are all not far from 300 hp from the factory. A few aftermarket components and a tune and they can easily surpass 300 hp.

Thus, manufacturers already provide cars with 150 to 180 hp per liter. So the N55 with a 3.0L turbo should be capable of producing 450-550 hp with the right tune and a few component tweaks. In addition, Burger, Vishnu, and Cobb have shown this is possible.

I agree. However It's the internals that will decide IF those numbers are really possible.

What ?

We know it is possible, better internals just mean it will lasts. The N55 is no slouch, look at the DINAN dyno-plots producing 380ft-lbs + of TQ from 1,500 ~ 5,400.

We all know BMW M can do better^ with new externals & internals.
It is NOT a question of how much horsepower, or torque.. the M2 has... it'll be about modulation and throttle response. (how they deal with induction/exhaust & lag). But seeing how the M2 is more of a track-orientated M, I suspect we will see special rims, lightweight components and a robust engine. With added cooling, tranny & new active suspension.

But, a 3,300lbs car with 385ft-lbs of torque just off idle (1,250rpms) doesn't care what the horsepower meter says @ 7,000rpms.

I rarely need to shift past 3.5k... I have a PPK2 & 3.08 final too. But as a token to how strong down low the N55 is, in the spring I often dig from a dead stop in 2nd gear... took a few mustangs this way. (These lightly-graveled Spring Michigan roads, make 1st pointless.)

The problem with the N55 isn't the internals, it's the ancillaries. There are plenty of N55s running M2 levels of power on stock internals without the internals failing.
