7,000 Rpm is the sweet spot
Seriously this is a very general question. I don't know what cruising is to you. Generally around 3,000 or a little higher is a good place to be if you want to be able to access the great torque our engines have to offer. |

Ideally you want to keep the RPMs as low as possible for the best MPG without lugging the engine (i.e. cruising). That being said, the lowest I'll go is maybe 1.3-1.5k RPM since I drive a manual - if I cruised at 1k then any time I slowed down a little I'd have to downshift. If I need to pass I would need to downshift anyways, so skipping gears isn't really any bother.
On the highway I cruise at 3k RPM because that's the lowest it go lol. |

Around town, driving calmly between traffic lights or in traffic, 1400-1500 frequently. Gives best gas mileage, car is very quiet, still have enough torque to move in or out if I need to, and I have a good excuse to enjoy the fun of downshifting if I need to move quickly.

Haha yea. Especially when he specified "cruising on city streets". Kind of an oxymoron because my city (an I assume others) are crazy stop-and-go traffic, stop lights every 100ft, and pedestrians crossing anywhere they feel like. Not a place I consider cruising.

I like to keep it around 2k-2.5k rpm for city driving, then on the highway or longer stretches of road where there are few lights I generally tend to shift up and keep the revs low to save fuel when i'm not driving spiritedly.

(I know I’m necro’ing an old thread, but it seemed the ideal topic. And maybe it’s nicer to have the topic all in one thread instead of two separate ones just to avoid reviving an old one?)
I noticed this recent post where I think I’m reading that the OP turnsignalslol will cruise around at 1K RPM: https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2003768 I’m a 6MT guy, so I was surprised by this. Will the DCT in our cars shift down as low as 1K RPM when loafing about town? With my manual gearbox, I’d thought that somewhere around 1.4K RPM was the lowest engine speed w/o lugging for when the car is moving (other than starting from a dead stop, of course). |

Interesting. Also on 6MT and for the most part end up a lot higher than 1k RPM. In fact, even in 6th gear 1k probably only gets me to about 26mph. Any faster and my RPMs will be higher. Figuring that because cruising on the highway around 80 I'm usually at about 3k rpm.
Wonder if that 7th gear of the DCT is a significant jump in divider to act as a sort of overdrive and help with efficiency? |

After replying to this thread and then taking a drive I'm going to revise my statement. 2K feels totally fine for normal driving, but I've learned to slowly raise the revs to at least 2.5K before I give the car any significant throttle to prevent lugging (especially when cold).

However, you have to experiment. I have a 2023 MINI JCW 6-speed and it is fine in 6th gear at 45mph. Gas mileage is very good in 6th gear... More generally as high a gear as is reasonable one that doesn't result in lugging the engine. |
