I don't want to be a Danny Downer, but I think car production is going to face over capacity in the next 12 months or so because of the COVID-19 epidemic. This is just my personal opinion.

The supply chain has already been disrupted for parts, to what extent this has had an impact on BMW I'm not sure. Also people from countries that have been severely affected by the outbreak are not likely to be buying new cars. So far Italy and South Korea come to mind as severely affected countries besides China. Unfortunately I think this is just the beginning and that the US is next in the escalating epidemic. In hard times people tend to postpone discretionary expenditures, especially with luxury automobiles. During the financial crash people cut way back on Porsche purchases and lease end offerings were very cheap. I almost bought one.

This should clear things up. 2021's are still not added to the order bank.

Thanks! But why would a model year be in production for 16 months? I would have thought 12 was the longest.

Car companies do this all the time for marketing and/or logistics purposes. For example, my Audi Q7 was launched in the US in the Fall of 2015 as a MY2017, and held that model year designation for 2 years. Whereas, in other countries it was launched as a 2016.
