LCI headlights with adaptive LED

Sorry in advance but I can't seem to find the answer for the adaptive LEDs.

When do the inner headlights light up? The ones that are closer to the grille I mean.

I see on low beam the outer lights come on. On high beam they are brighter.

Both hex angel eyes are on.

Never, something I also learnt after buying the car & I could only find it documented on this forum. I was initially disappointed those inner headlights are fake but in practise the light of these LED adaptives is better/brighter than the adaptive bi xenon lights on my previous car.

Lol thanks for letting me know.

I've got adaptive leds on my g01 x3 M40i and both sets are on. So I assumed these were similar.

You need to turn on daytime running lights in the idrive menu.

Oh those rings are on. I was talking about the lights inside the lenses closer to the grilles.

I will ask my dad...I would have guessed that those light up on the side you’re turning to, as long as the light switch is on the automatic setting (I don’t think the adaptive aspect works if you’ve turned it into the “on”).

What you have labelled "NEVER ON" is correct, it will never light up. The glass lens of those inner 'fake headlights' is also carried over from the pre LCI bi-xenon lights, stand back and look head-on and you can see they are different to the outer LED lenses.

Great picture.

I had no idea this was the case - any clue why that light isn’t functional?

No clue. I was fiddling with the light switches and that when I noticed.

Simple - it added an additional cost to the car that BMW thought the customer would not pay for, thus no inner lights and increased profit margin.

You could be right of course...but if that was the approach, why have the fake one there? It costs something too.

Likely aesthetics. Would look "off" if there were nothing inside the inner ring. they need to keep the inner ring as this is the BMW trademark...the double halos.

A fake lens with no inner costs around 5 dollars in materials - a LED headlight with adaptive function would likely cost 600+ dollars at cost + R&D time + more testing to meet DOT / ECE standards ETC ETC ETC - that is why.

You just turn the switch to parking lights, same thing.

The advantage to leaving the DRL off, is you can turn the switch of quickly.

There should be a way to code the car so the DRLs are off when the lightswitch is in the "0" (off) position too, I believe. I was messing with it the other day but then it got cold again here and I haven't gone back out to mess with it. One of the things I liked about my TT was that the DRLs would turn off if you put the headlight switch to 0. In Auto, they'd come on during the day as expected.

Wow I never knew this! I wonder how many of my BMWs past and present have fake lights! F80 too? GO1?

Might be.

But when the car is running I want to be able to choose regardless.
