Just here to pop in and say that I am glad they recovered it.
Will be applying extra security because of this thread, thankful for the knowledge.
Theft is for tossers and sheep shaggers, but it's part of humanity unfortunately.
Hope they catch them and give them paper cuts until they bleed out.

We unfortunately have open borders in Europe. Cars are stolen to order, and are driven east immediately. Stolen cares used to end up in Poland. Now folks further east come to Poland to steal cars. No prizes for guessing where they all end up. As a thief, chances of getting caught are slim. And even if you do, punishment is laughable.

Since car alarms and immobilizers by an OEM are often replicated across their entire line, gangs rent cars they have their eyes on for a few days (say, Sixt), then practice on said car before applying what they've learned to steal cars like the OP's.

Top Gear taught me that all stolen cars in Europe end up in Albania.

I guess OP got fined by the local PD earlier due to speeding or loud exhaust, not by this incident! Or maybe after recovering the vehicle police found that exhaust was illegal as per the regulations.

How hard can it be to acquire the same tech? I wonder if it's easier to sell a stolen car or parts of a stolen car in Europe than the US so it's more worth it and less risk in EU?
It's much easier to sell a stolen car in Europe

This type of things happens way to often, i mean we have had comfort access for a long time on our cars regardless of brand, this is an issue. Glad you got your car back, unfortunately when my sisters X5 was stolen the exact same way the car was found in a lorry somewhere in Eastern Europe in scraps and parts she had an X5 hybrid so they didn't even hear the car getting stolen during the night cause the car started in EV mode so when they got out from the house in the morning the car was gone.....

Garage is your best friend, i have wondered so many times when i see footage from the US in the suburban parts of the country and i just see all these cars standing in the front yard even though the homes got Garage, i just wondered for my self why not keep your car in the garage it is so much more protected from all the nasty parts of nature and stuff like bird spill and such.

Oh well maybe Bimmerpost should just run a front page news informing all the owners of cars with comfort access how to keep their keys safe and out of reach from bad people like in the video.

Just google car thefts per capita. America is super high it's in the top 10 in the world. So think these assumptions are wrong about europe.

Also the fact that it's wrong that there are more car thefts in europe. Simple google car thefts per capita. USA are top 10.

I did, Western Europe surpassed the US in auto theft rate.

Also, in the US, it's mostly used, lower-tier vehicles are stolen for joyriding or body parts.

In Europe, thieves go after high-end luxury vehicles like BMW, Range Rovers, Mercedes to re-tag and export for sale.

I know I'm going to sound like an asshole for saying this but I'm impress they were able to circumvent the factory security system so efficiently. They're POS and deserve to be in a cage but I can't help but admire the fluidity of their skills.

I value a garage for more than theft! In California the cars parked outside show it within a year. Window rubber cracks, carbon roofs crack, paint may bubble and fail. Mine is black so these things are exasperated. In the case of this story a manually closed gate would be great help.

Just don't spec Comfort Access or have it de-activated when buying an used BMW ... Comfort Access is such a PoS you almost feel sympathy for those people taking advantage of it.

BMW not actively warning its customers about CA indicates the business model behind these crimes.

Faraday bag is the only way to prevent this. You can keep your keys on the opposite side of the house and they can still do a relay attack on it. Our keys were at least 100m from the car and in the middle of the house and they still managed to get in.

👆this. Nothing discourages a late night prowler like a real possibility of encountering an armed home/car owner.

In my old neighborhood in a Miami suburb, we routinely left high end cars in driveways, top down, doors unlocked, stuff on seats, accessible to all, yet never had anyone prowl the neighborhood to so much as look at the cars. A bunch of hooded dudes at night would in short order be noticed, challenged and stopped for questioning by armed residents. If we saw something, we did something:
Years ago, the following exchange took place:

‘Hey dude, this is a private property with posted signs, you visiting somebody here? Who?
No? Just ‘looking around’ at 1:30 am? Who the F am I?
OK, stay right there until I get the sheriff over here to check you out. Me and Mr Mossberg here says you ain’t going nowhere until we find out who the F you are and what you’re doing in our community.’

Worked like magic. Cops took the guy in 6 min later, he was real dumb, scared, admitted to casing the neighborhood for a ‘known’ crew.

Perps might be stupid but they aren’t completely crazy, so they pick other ‘easier’ states (NYC?) to ply their trade.

Funny how that works, even though I don’t personally carry or own firepower, most others in the community do, and there’s never any trouble in my neck of the woods, where garage doors and cars are wide open, pricey cars sitting in driveways top down, key fobs sometimes permanently in glove boxes or in center console, so you don’t forget or lose it...

Glad you got her back!

When I lived in Manhattan, I would street park by my apartment so I could usually see the car from my window, but I kept my key in a faraday cage
