Should I change my M2 for an X3M?

Would like to hear some opinions on this topic. I have an itch to change my OG M2 for something else. I don’t really have the need for an suv other than the fact that I do live in CT and get snow so I can’t drive the M2 in the winter. I have a jeep wrangler that I can drive in the winter but would like to just have one do it all car if I could. So I was looking at a 22 X3M but don’t know if I will regret my decision after. I know there’s a lot of if’s and buts in my thoughts just wanted to get another perspective on my thoughts. I had a deal started for an X3M about two months ago but backed out due to the deal not making sense and a sense of regret when I got back in the M2 and drove it😂.

Your last line answered your question. And why would you want two ‘suv’ like vehicles despite not needing an suv? Keep the M2.
Get rid of the Jeep and get something like a Ranger Raptor.

Don't do it. Get snow tires and drive the M2. I lived in CT and had the M2 along with SUVs yet still drove the m2 as much as I could because it was just more fun.

X3M is a great car but I’d never own one instead of my M2. I’d get one as the daily driver compliment to my weekend M2 but never as a replacement lol

Man, marketing in this country really has everyone believing they need to buy a souped up minivan as their daily. Every fiber in your body is telling you not to and you're still fighting the urge.

Buy more cars people. There's enough Q's and X's on the road for two generations, buy more cars so we can have more cars. So many awesome hatches we don't get, so many wagons, so many useful fun awesome cars, but everybody keeps buying minivans.

The funny thing is an M2 is a daily, it fits 4 people with ease and has a decent sized trunk. I daily a 911 and have two kids in car seats.

Sadly someone hit my M2 last month and it is no more, so it was a "forced" change as I couldn't bring myself to buy another M2 so instead I replaced it with a second 911 (it makes sense in my head, I swear). I loved the M2 and frankly still miss it as it was a jack of all trades (although a master of none).

I've run snow tires on my M2, and they do fantastic. Just because there is snow on the ground does not mean an AWD SUV is required.

On the subject of kids, the guy I bought my M2 from was selling it because he had his first kid, who was less than 1 year old at the time. He immediately bought a new 3-row SUV with the proceeds. The irony is that I purchased the M2 because it was practical enough to occasionally fit my two young kids in the back, yet it has all the proper driving dynamics and performance.

Live in Canada in the snow belt, drive the M2 year round. Get a good set of winters and you'll be fine.

Test drove an x3mC this weekend as I was considering the trade as well but I wasn't enthused with the driving experience. Fast but too floaty & insulated. The seats sit too high, transmission doesn't feel involving, suspension is much softer -- overall I didn't feel connected to the vehicle. But I like my cars nimble & raw so you may have a different opinion.

No surprise there, those are all the qualities you'd expect from a minivan.

No way. Have you driven one? Its a mid sized SUV... it will be fast, but floaty and sit high.

So sorry to hear, hopefully everyone is ok.
Interested to hear your thought of driving both on handling and spirited road driving. Is the 911 a huge upgrade in the experience?

That just about expresses my experience with the X3/4 platform. We got an X4M40i which I still drive from time to time. It feels so so so insulated. You can hear a really nice exhaust note. But only if you stand outside. Inside, you just hear the speakers (if you are lucky), the transmission is just uninspiring, and you feel so high you can just fly off.

A few weeks back I drove it on a road I am used to drive on in my M2 so I felt quite confident but the car just could not handle it. I almost went off road a few times just because of the soft suspension, high center of gravity and overall floatiness of the car.

I guess some of the aches of the M40i can be cured with the full fat M but the main ones will always remain as they are inherent to the platform.

Thankfully I was in the car solo, no kids and I saw the person not paying attention coming and was braced, walked away.

I have two 911s now, 996.2 (coils, exhaust, etc) and a 991.1 (replaced M2). I have seat time in every generation on road and some on track; and in short the driving experience and handling fun in 911s are notably better than the F87. They are more engaging, more rewarding and truly more of a driving experience to me. Now that is my opinion, the F87 is a phenomenal car and I absolutely loved mine and I do not think there is a better 1 car solution for an enthusiast that values a back seat. I would not have sold my M2 anytime soon if it was not totaled, truly zero complaints. One notable is also that I recently moved from a lifelong CT resident to the southeast where snow is not a thing and you can run summer tires year round. I drove the M2 year round in CT with snow tires, if I still lived in CT I probably would have gone a different direction.

I know many car people get the itch over time to switch cars thinking they want something else but with the M2 I simply wouldn't. It punches above its weight class and does everything.

Now if you do not need/value a back seat, go look at a 981/718, the balance in those is amazing and the way they rotate, plus you get trunk and frunk.

I have both and wouldn't trade one for the other. Both are really awesome and capable cars, but they serve a different purpose.

The M2 is more raw, connected, and fun on track/backroads.

The X3M is much faster, has a ton of tech, more practical, and handles surprisingly well for a car of its size.

Both feel really special and I intend on keeping them both for a long time. But if I could only keep one of them forever, it'd probably be the M2.

There are only disadvantages to the X3, unless you value the people-mover properties. High COG, heavy, and the silliness of an M-badged SUV.

If you have a Jeep for the winter, you already have a more or less ideal garage.

I appreciate everyone’s input on this, and yeah I don’t think I’m ready to let go of the F87. It’s just a very raw feeling sports car and it makes me happy every time I drive it. I won’t say I will never sell it but if I can manage to keep checking off dream cars and keeping the M2 I will. Next purchase will be an E90. All this until I can get into a 911😂. To satisfy my urge I will just buy another modification for now. Thank you all

Great, to hear, and that is a great idea. Honestly after commenting on this thread it made me think more about my F87 and yesterday out of the blue my wife asked if I missed the car and I don't think she finished the question before I said "yes". I've even caught myself looking at ones for sale.

I have an 2018 M2 and a 2020
X3MC… for some reason I reach for the M2 keys more even though it’s slower than the x3M😂 but both are great vehicles can’t go wrong with either one… since you don’t need an suv why even consider one?
