I mean you have the issue it sounds textbook. It will only get worse with time. You need to address it with the bolt replace.

So I definitely have this issue. My car is a 2020 with 38K on it. Out of warranty and I dounbt I will get a good will repair. I have looked at all of the info regarding the DIY repair and I'm comfortable with doing it. Just looks like a pain in the ass to do but not "complicated". My concern is this post https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2149049

F80manz What are your thoughts on what he says and how has your car been since the repair you did 6 months back. What was the milage on your car at the time of repair?

Can anyone else chime in on how the repair went and if you did it yourself, BMW did it or if an indy did it. What did the dealer do vs indy or your own DIY?

Looks like the cost will be 600-1200 in parts and tools depending on if I replace the valve cover.

This sucks lol

Thanks in advance!

FIX S55 Engine ticking/knocking noise DIY

After much research and information on the forum, I solved the engine ticking/knocking noise on the 2019 M2C yesterday(EUR VERSION). My car is only 15,000 miles old and has 0 modifications. I completed the DIY in about 6 hours with the help of a friend with extensive DIY experience and a mechanic with over 20 years of experience rebuilding engines.

The root of the problem: Camshaft carrier bolts/covers. When replacing and removing the bolts we discovered that the Camshaft carrier bolts were not just loose. The 15 bolts were not uniformly tight, and we felt that some of the bolts were tightened by more than 30+nm lmao. After inspecting the removed factory bolts we found that they were stretched, and several were even twisted (not straight).

It is strongly recommended that those who encounter similar problems solve them immediately to avoid potential damage.

Parts used for DIY (Based on my 2019 M2C):
1. HT-12 Green Coolant (83-19-2-468-442)
2. 1x Valve cover gasket (11-12-7-587-804)
3. 3x Spark plug tube seals (11-12-7-589-830)
4. 1x Valve cover flange seal (11-37-7-502-022)
5. 6x Injector decoupler elements (13-53-7-577-649)
6. 6x Injector gasket rings (13-53-7-591-006)
7. 4x High-pressure oil rail Decoupling element (13-53-7-628-063)
8. 4x High-pressure oil rail Sleeve (13-53-7-628-064)
9. 15x Cam carrier Torx bolt (11-12-7-535-024)

special tools:
If you need to reuse the injectors, I recommend buying an injector removal tool and an injector seal tool, it makes life easier. You can buy replicas of the BMW original tools on AMAZON, they work just fine.

Remove the injector well and replace each bolt one by one. No need to readjust the engine timing. If you have the time, this is something that can be done in your garage.

I hope this information can help you

It seems crazy on the torque - it also doesn’t seem like it was just a bad batch either. Clearly the machine wasn’t set up correctly that torqued it down for the entire production run. My 2021 is one of the last made and it still had it.

So not sure how many of you have a tune and this issue. I have a tune and the sound. My tune had different colds start parameters and was recently reverted back to stock cold start parameters. The noise stopped. I can hear it very faintly if I get my ear close to the VC. Anyone else experience this? I'm still going to do the repair but it's much quieter now.
