The sound is too flat. Reminds me of how the 911TT sounds in that sense. The sound doesn't have enough drama to it.

I actually prefer the F80's more dramatic sound to this. You can easily tell this engine is not as unique as the S55 as it sounds like a tuned N55 (which it is) that could have been on any 335i, M235i, 435i, etc...

They've compensated for a real exhaust sound with all these random cracks and burbles but under load it sounds very unexciting. I like the deep, low idle but this engine's sound isn't fooling me.

It's no 2JZ in terms of sound but it sounds good nonetheless

This is what I was getting at... The F80/2 has such an amount of drama to it. On full throttle it sounds crazy! It's almost like the M2/N55 in general sounds muffled / strangled. Hard to explain, my M135i was the same.. It sounds good, but just not very exciting?!

I've heard both engines (and believe it or not, I'm trying to get an F80), but the M2 sounds better, while still being exciting. Not even remotely a doubt here in my mind.

And the overrun on the S55 still sucks.

F-gen 35i's sound to me way more muffled than Exx 35i's... 335is sounds especially throaty.

Sounds pretty damn good for stock, actually much better than my F80 prior to installing the MPE. Guessing an MPE or AWE will sound incredible!

Far more mellow sounding than the S55. Sounds pretty solid. I still have a hard time falling in love with the sound of a turbocharged engine.

It's also glaringly obvious that BMW have done a crazy amount of processing/dubbing to the audio in the launch film. Lame.

Is the engine sound likely to be the same in the cabin as m235i. The 235i sounds fake so I hope they do some tweaking and have some unique sounds directed into the cabin(not artificial)

The exhaust is almost certainly going to be louder, which means it will sound different in the cabin. Also, because the current version of Active Sound uses actual engine sounds (er something similar), and because the exhaust on the M2 will unquestionably sound different than the M235i, you can count on it being different than the M235i to some degree.

Whether or not you will like it can only be determined by a test drive.

I was on the verge of purchasing the M3, but after reading your comment I changed my mind.

Still hate the concept of active sound.

Big fan of M2.

Sound on the M2 is spot on! No idea how it got so mixed up sounding on the M3/4.

Well done M2 sound engineers.

I would be careful to make ultimate relative comparisons though. After all this is a professionally recorded sound clip in special environment with special equipment. You would need to listen back to back to a similarly reocorded f8x clip to make fair statements.
Is the single turbo vs twin turbo setup the primary source of the sound difference?
Also dont forget that for the drivers perception it will boil down to the M4 active sound vs M2 active sound quality )))))
Very true, however, if we compare the donor engine in the M235i to the M4; to my ears, active or not, the sound resonates closer to the classic BMW straight six I have admired and loved over the years.

The M4 barks but has a very monotone character where M2 is aurally more complex.

I like the sound better than my M4. The M4 has a monotone to it which I don't like.
I have some high hopes for the M2 as I'm considering trading 'down'. I don't need the space of the 4 series anyway and have a few minor gripes with the car.

How much is real mechanical sound vs piped in digital sound? Did you know the i8 has a weather proof speaker under the left rear wheel arch that is only there to make fake exhaust sound? Lame right?

I loved the sound of my old n55 335i with the bmw PE and the M2 sounds similar to that which is good. However, there's nothing that makes it stand out from the other n55's which kind of sucks. The f8x sounds terrible but at least it's unique.

Hopefully the MPE will solve the issue.
