And tonight's mini-project, hard-wiring the radar detector

Hey man, where did you get that slimline license plate frame? I like it and want to pick one up.

Also.. does that radar save you often?

Cheers!

Howdy! Here's the part number for the plate frame. It come with M valve stem caps too: 82122456418

Yes, I have two of these detectors, Beltronics RX-65. It's and oldie but reliable. They have done some recent upgrades. Do know that Beltronics are the exact same as Escort, just branded and marketed differently. Only potential complaint is a few too many false alerts with all the cars with cameras and sensors these days

Very cool collection of cars. We have very similar taste!

2 questions:
1) How badly do you miss your GT3? Was it worth the huge expense? It's still one of my dream cars, but geez they are expensive
2) Why did you track an S54 powered E36 instead of just getting another E46 M3? How did the 2 compare?

Thanks! Regarding the GT3... loved the car, but really didn't fit a good niche for me in where i was at in terms of tracking and weekend enjoyment. I really want to be able to push the limits of a car at the track, and doing so in a GT3 is beyond my comfort zone given my track experience (meaning i have way more to learn, and the GT3 is way more car than i am track driver), and cost to replace should something go wrong. For the street... it's way too much car for the street. Plus, my weekend car these days needs to accommodate my kiddo, otherwise, the weekend car rarely gets driven (for example, 3K miles on my GT4 in 1.5 years of ownership). Do I miss it? No. Would l love to have one in the stable? Absolutely.

For the S54/e36... my first e36 was cursed, so when looking for a replacement, i still wanted something lower cost, so i wouldn't be too far out $-wise should something bad happen at the track. But also looking to keep operating cost relatively low (brakes, tires, etc.). The e36M and a Cayman were the choices for me. Since I had so much stuff for the track from my first e36, I decided to give it another go with an e36 (and not "upgrade to to an e46M). The current e36 that i got was very well built... had stage 3 turner motor upgrades, full cage built by turner, etc. etc. I only decided to swap in the S54 when i got a deal i couldn't refuse from a friend for his motor, and another friend wanted/needed my motor at the same time.

So, to compare the e46M versus my S54/e36... i'd say it's hard to do. My e36 experience is with dedicated, gutted track cars. My e46M was still mostly street. But, some rough opinions are that the e36 is a little more fun due to slightly smaller chassis. The S54 swap really makes the thing shine

Yep, tap to the connector for the rear-view mirror. Used one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/Escort-Direct...adar+hard+wire

Splice power to the green/brown wire for the mirror and ground to the brown/black.

Bud, CAE does make the shifter for our cars. I'll going to put in the order. I think you should consider going with one. Probably the best shifter IMO. Absolutely no play, feel like shifting in a Pcar with dogbox. Looks pretty good as well interior wise.

Well look at that. Too much for me for what I'm doing with my car. I'd do that shifter if my plans were more track-focused. For me, it's about street and weekend drives.

I think you'll like it even if you use it for DD and spirit drives. Feels so much more refine. Come try it if you're in SA on the M3.

Wonderful response, thank you! That's a great point about the GT3 being too much for the street, because that's pretty much what it would be for.

I'm back to considering an M2 Comp 6MT towards the end of its life cycle. Much cheaper than GT3, potentially last of the manuals and it has torque (which none of my cars have).

I'll be keeping up with your thread for sure

How much of a PITA is removing the diffuser? I really want the M Performance one, but don’t want to pay for installation.

I found it a pain. I taped up the bumper and used a plastic pry tool putting more pressure down than out. Some other forum member did it this way and I just copied their method. The tabs on the bumper are fragile but everything gets screwed on or rivet in so tight I can't imagine it would matter if you damaged them and you can't see them with the diffuser on.

Agreed it's a pain. I was able to reach underneath and press down on some of the tabs from the back to make it a little easier. I'm definitely not looking forward to fitting the M Performance one back on.

I'm pumped. I just got back from dropping off the car. It's going to be a little while before I get it back (shop schedule and my work travel schedule). They will send progression pics, but I'm only going to post when she's all done

Update here after installing my Beltronics and going for a drive... no issues. Laser working as usual.

I imagine it's similar to my AKG in the e36... too much for me for my goals, including keeping OEM+ look. I've got an illuminated shift knob to install

Thank you! Can I ask which vendor you bought from? There's a lot of options and want to make sure I use the right one.

Also keen to know where you got the storage net?

Thanks!

Sure, i got nearly all my stuff from BMWPartsPros. Got a few smaller items from ECSTuning. I can't remember which for these specific items but was certainly either of those two
