Keeping 2018 M2 after lease end?
Hey everyone, I am too attached to this car to return it at the end of my lease next year and wondering what to expect in terms of cost of ownership.
It's a 2018 M2 with 65,000kms (40,000miles), I am second owner but have all services records done from BMW. It is my daily driver and I drive about 20k/year 1) I am considering buying it out next year at the end of the lease, and wondering any big costs coming up out of warranty? I think I will keep it around 120,000kms or so (75,000miles). Thoughts on high mileage F87 M2?? 2) Where exactly can I find the service maintenance schedule, do I really just rely on the iDrive computer system to tell me when to maintain it and that's it? Am I crazy to keep an M car out of warranty... Thank You |

I’d keep it. I haven’t heard any long term horror stories about N55 motors, and there are many with high miles . . .
It will likely always have value, and you may end up essentially driving it for “free” since I don’t imagine depreciation being awful. I see 2018s in Canada still listed for 50k plus. What’s the buyout? Can you get an extended warranty if it qualifies for a CPO? |

Oil leaks and a blown charge pipe are about all I'd be worried about. N55 is stout.
This assumes you don't constantly beat on the engine.

I definitely am keeping mine after the warranty. Other than the taillights I have had zero problems. Too much of a fun car to replace it.

Keep it!
The N55 holds up well for the most part - I've owned 4 BMWs with this engine. Items that will usually need repair at some point within first 100k miles are OFHG around 60k and waterpump around 80k. Other than that it's been routine maintenance like plugs, brakes, etc for all my cars. |

Same here! I'm in Canada too!
My lease is due in March and my car has only 23k on the clock where as my allowance is 36k. My buyout is 42.5k plus tax so I'm wondering if I should keep it or trade it in and use the positive equity I may have as a down payment for another car.... But it's hard to find anything check all the boxes.... |

I'm sure at a certain point the car will become too costly to maintain to continue daily driving (as is the story with all BMWs), but that could be a few years down the line. It can just become a garage queen at that point.
Also, unrelated but you've owned some awesome cars OP!

my lease on my 2018 lci m2 is also coming to an end in september, buy-back is 35, and in canada they still go for 50+, so tempted to flip it and get into a 2016 m3 or something...but m2 ticks all the boxes

All used cars went up in price after the COVID pandemic started. Pretty much all fun cars across the board went up around 10%. Things are starting to settle out, but depreciation will be slower than normal for a while, I think.

I’ve seen many of the same private party M2s sitting on the market for 2+ months — in my local market and nationally. |

Price is a direct result of demand, if they cars were not moving the prices would go down to influence sales.

Can you consider keeping the car and maybe leasing a daily driver? Then you can avoid the excessive mileage on the M2 and minimize your cash outlay (you can lease a 240i for around $450/month).
Is the car 6MT or DCT (this is a warranty factor)? The N55 B30T0 will be reliable, but, as mentioned, water pump is one area. Also, VANOS solenoid will need replacing. |

In the US at least, the residual on the M2 is and was so pathetic, that if you were dumb enough to lease (sorry, seriously the best word), your buy out is now so far below market, that if you don't buy out the car and sell it on your own, you are committing a second dumb mistake and in effect, simply given BMW FS a bunch of money - again.....

If you say so... the used M2 market in particular says otherwise. People are sitting on the same cars for MONTHS, the only ones selling are going well below what most people think theirs is worth.

It's hard to track that so you're mostly speculating Currently people are desperate to sell and few people are buying
